INTRODUCTION Four species of seals live in association with sea ice in Alaska; these are the ringed seal (Phoca hispida), spotted seal (P. largha), bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), and ribbon seal (Histriophoca fasciata or Phoca fasciata).
