The roots/rhizomes of Cimicifuga racemosa L. (Nutt.) (black cohosh) have traditionally been used to treat menopausal symptoms through an unknown mechanism of action. In an effort to determine if black cohosh had additional health benefits, methanol extracts were investigated for their potential to scavenge reactive oxygen species and to protect against menadione-induced DNA damage. These extrac...

Surface charge density studies as well as characterizations of coagulated dye sludge were investigated to explain the mechanism which takes place during removal of dyes from effluents by chemical coagulation. A simple laboratory model was used to compare two commercially used textile azo dyes: CI “Reactive Black 5” and “Acid Black 1” that were coagulated with synthetic primary coagulants have b...

Treatment of an azo dye, Reactive Black 5 (RB5) by combined electrocoagulation-activated carbon adsorption-microwave regeneration process was evaluated. The toxicity was also monitored by the Vibrio fischeri light inhibition test. GAC of 100 g L(-1) sorbed 82% of RB5 (100 mg L(-1)) within 4h. RB5-loaded GAC was not effectively regenerated by microwave irradiation (800 W, 30s). Electrocoagulatio...

In an attempt to find a more efficient technique for biodegradation of the recalcitrant Reactive Black 5 (RB-5) dye, a composite xylan-polyvinyl alcohol (xylan-PVOH) hydrogel was used to immobilize laccase from the white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor. Xylan was prepared from the black liquor of pulp and paper effluent, and it was esterified with citric acid prior to cross-linking with polyviny...

In this study, Reactive Black 5 (RB5) was removed from synthetic wastewater using Fenton's oxidation (FO) process. Experiments were conducted on the samples containing 100 and 200 mg l(-1) of RB5 to remove the dye toxicity. Seventy-five milligram per litre of RB5 caused 25% toxicity on 24-h born daphnids whereas 100 mg l(-1) of RB5 displayed 100% toxicity on Daphnia magna. The study was perform...

Electrochemical-oxidation of Reactive Black-5 (RB5) was conducted for degradation using DSA type Ti/RuO2-SnO2Sb2O5 electrode. In the study, for electro-oxidation, electrode was indigenously fabricated in laboratory using titanium as substrate. This substrate was coated using different metal oxides RuO2, Sb2O5 and SnO2 by thermal decomposition method. Laboratory scale batch reactor was used for ...

In this study, the effect of preparation route of magnetic graphene oxide (mGO) on Reactive Black 5 (RB5) adsorption was investigated. The synthesis of mGO was achieved both with (i) impregnation method (mGOi nanoparticles), and (ii) co-precipitation (mGOp nanoparticles). After synthesis, the full characterization with various techniques (SEM, FTIR, XRD, DTA, DTG, VSM) was achieved revealing ma...

This work looks for a better understanding of the biodegradation of xenobiotic azo dyes mediated by yeasts. During a screening program of phenolic acid assimilating capacities it was found that a non-conventional ascomycetous yeast isolate, identified as Candida oleophila, efficiently decolorizes agar plates supplemented with the commercial textile diazo dye Reactive Black 5. Aerobic batch cult...

This study investigates the effect of mixing intensity and reagents addition strategy on Fenton's reagent degrading a common reactive diazo type dyestuff, Reactive Black 5. Within the experimental conditions used in the study, the effect of mixing intensity on TOC removal was observed to be both significant and complex. Using factorial analysis, it was found that if the reagents are added near ...
