We present 18-cm radio maps of four Seyfert nuclei, Mrk 1, Mrk 3, Mrk 231 and Mrk 463E, made with the European VLBI Network (EVN). Linear radio structures are present in three out of four sources on scales of ∼100 pc to ∼1 kpc, and the 20-mas beam of the EVN enables us to resolve details within the radio structures on scales of < 10 pc. Mrk 3 was also imaged using MERLIN and the data combined w...

Context. We present medium spectral resolution near-infrared (NIR) HK-band spectra for eight low redshift (z < 0.06) radio galaxies to study the NIR stellar properties of their host galaxies. The sample was selected from the radio galaxy sample imaged previously in the Band R-band. They were found to be bluer than inactive elliptical galaxies, possibly indicating a recent star formation episode...

After briefly summarizing the main tenets of unified schemes of Active Galactic Nuclei, I review some recent results in the field of unification of radio-loud sources, both for the low-luminosity (BL Lacs and Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxies) and high-luminosity (radio quasars and FanaroffRiley type II radio galaxies) populations.

During the course of an investigation on the interaction of the radio galaxy 3C129 and its ambient cluster gas, we found excess X-ray emission aligned with the northern radio jet. The emission extends from the weak X-ray core of the host galaxy ≈ 2.5 to the first resolved radio knot. On a smaller scale, we have also detected a weak radio extension in the same position angle with the VLBA. Altho...

We present spectroscopic follow-up of an overdensity of galaxies photometrically selected to be at 1.4 < z < 2.5 found in the vicinity of the radio galaxy 7C 1756+6520 at z = 1.4156. Using the DEIMOS optical multi-object spectrograph on the Keck 2 telescope, we observed a total of 129 BzK-selected sources, comprising 82 blue, star-forming galaxy candidates (sBzK) and 47 red, passivelyevolving g...

We present optical and/or near-IR images of 128 ultra steep spectrum (USS) radio sources. Roughly half of the objects are identified in the optical images (R ∼ < 24), while in the near-IR images, >94% are detected at K ∼< 22. The mean K−magnitude is K̄ = 19.26 within a 2 ′′ diameter aperture. The distribution of R − K colors indicates that at least 1/3 of the objects observed have very red color...

The properties of high-redshift quasar host galaxies are studied in order to investigate the connection between galaxy evolution, nuclear activity, and the formation of supermassive black holes. We combine new near-IR observations of three high-redshift quasars (2 < z < 3), obtained at the ESOVery Large Telescope equipped with adaptive optics, with selected data from the literature. For the thr...

We study the stellar mass assembly of the Spiderweb Galaxy (MRC 1138-262), a massive z = 2.2 radio galaxy in a protocluster and the probable progenitor of a brightest cluster galaxy. Nearby protocluster galaxies are identified and their properties are determined by fitting stellar population models to their rest-frame ultraviolet to optical spectral energy distributions. We find that within 150...

We report on a preliminary study concerning the origin of radio emission within radio galaxies at L(1.4GHz)>1E24 W/Hz in the GOODS-N field. In the local universe, Condon et al. (1989) and Yun et al. (2001) have shown that in galaxies with radio luminosities greater than 1 × 10 23 W/Hz the majority of the radio emission originates from a 'monster' i.e., an AGN. Using the Chandra 2Msec X-ray imag...

This is the second of a series of three papers exploring the connection between the multiwavelength properties of AGN in nearby early-type galaxies and the characteristics of their hosts. We selected two samples with 5 GHz VLA radio flux measurements down to 1 mJy, reaching levels of radio luminosity as low as 10 erg s. In Paper I we presented a study of the surface brightness profiles for the ...
