The authors report the self-organized growth of InAs/ InAlAs quantum wires on nominal 001 InP substrate and 001 InP substrates misoriented by 2°, 4°, and 8° towards both −110 and 110 . The influence of substrate misorientation on the structural and optical properties of these InAs/ InAlAs quantum wires is studied by transmission electron microscopy and photoluminescence measurements. Compared w...

Electromagnetic duality between the Aharonov-Bohm and the Aharonov-Casher quantum mechanical phases predicts the existence of a new collective state of matter which can be regarded as a spin dual to the fractional quantum Hall effect. The state, induced by electric fields, is driven by effective spin-spin interactions. We derive experimental and materials conditions of spin-spin interactions an...

Strongly correlated quantum systems in low dimensions often exhibit novel quantum ordering. This ordering is sometimes hidden and can be revealed only by examining new ‘dual’ types of correlations. Such ordering leads to novel collective modes and fractional quantum numbers. Examples will be presented from quantum spin chains and the quantum Hall effect.

quantum theory poses itself to be a challenging counterpart to the intelligent design argument. quantum physics founded upon uncertainty, probability and statistics has exerted great influence since its inception on the philosophical thinking of man. the findings of this theory has helped bring about a dramatic transformation in the notion of ‘order in nature.’ in modern physics, it is hardly p...

Overdispersion is a common feature of models of biological data, but researchers often fail to model the excess variation driving the overdispersion, resulting in biased parameter estimates and standard errors. Quantifying and modeling overdispersion when it is present is therefore critical for robust biological inference. One means to account for overdispersion is to add an observation-level r...

Many psychology studies are statistically underpowered. In part, this may be because many researchers rely on intuition, rules of thumb, and prior practice (along with practical considerations) to determine the number of subjects to test. In Study 1, we surveyed 291 published research psychologists and found large discrepancies between their reports of their preferred amount of power and the ac...

Objective(s):  Medicinal benefits of quantum dots have been proved in recent years but there is little known about their toxicity especially in vivo toxicity. In order to use quantum dots in medical applications, studies ontheir in vivo toxicity is important.  Materials and Methods:CdSe:ZnS quantum dots were injected in 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg doses to male mice10 days later, mice were sacrificed ...

Laughlin’s Ansatz to explain the fractional Quantum Hall effect is derived by coupling a particle associated with “exotic” the two-fold central extension of the planar Galilei group. The reduced system is identical to the one used to describe the dynamics of vortices in an incompressible planar fluid.

The implementation of modular invariance on the torus at the quantum level is discussed in a group-theoretical framework. Two cases must be considered, depending on the cohomology class of the symplectic form on the torus. If it is of integer cohomology class n, then full modular invariance is achieved at the quantum level only for those wave functions on the torus which are periodic if n is ev...
