Refinable functions are functions that are in a sense self-similar: If you add shrunken translates of a refinable function in a weighted way, then you obtain that refinable function again. For instance, see Figure 1 for how a quadratic B-spline can be decomposed into four small B-splines and how the so called Daubechies-2 generator function is decomposed into four small variants of itself. All ...

The constructionof quadraticC 1 surfacesfrom B-spline control points is generalized to a wider class of control meshes capable of outlining arbitrary free-form surfaces in space. Irregular meshes with non quadrilateral cells and more or fewer than four cells meeting at a point are allowed so that arbitrary free-form surfaces with or without boundary can be modeled in the same conceptual frame w...

s-dimensional generalized polynomials are linear combinations of functions forming an ECT-system on a compact interval with coefficients from R. ECT-spline curves in R are constructed by glueing together at interval endpoints generalized polynomials generated from different local ECT-systems via connection matrices. If they are nonsingular, lower triangular and totally positive there is a basis...

We propose a complex generalization of Schoenberg’s cardinal splines. To this end, we go back to the Fourier domain definition of the B-splines and extend it to complex-valued degrees. We show that the resulting complex B-splines are piecewise modulated polynomials, and that they retain most of the important properties of the classical ones: smoothness, recurrence, and two-scale relations, Ries...

The main goal of this paper is to present some generalizations of polynomial B-splines, which include exponential B-splines and the larger family of exponential pseudo-splines. We especially focus on their connections to subdivision schemes. In addition, we generalize a well-known result on the approximation order of exponential pseudo-splines, providing conditions to establish the approximatio...

We address the problem of reconstructing scalar and vector functions from non-uniform data. The reconstruction problem is formulated as a minimization problem where the cost is a weighted sum of two terms. The first data term is the quadratic measure of goodness of fit, whereas the second regularization term is a smoothness functional. We concentrate on the case where the later is a semi-norm i...

In this paper we prove that there exists a unique positive symmetrical univariate B-spline with minimal support. It is obtained as linear combination of a minimal number of successive classical B-splines with multiple knots in the space, S d , of cardinal polynomial splines of class C and degree d. Next, we show that the approximation order in the space generated by the integer translates of th...

The definition of a B-spline is extended to unordered knot sequences. The added flexibility implies that the resulting piecewise polynomials, named U-splines, can be negative and locally linearly dependent. It is therefore remarkable that linear combinations of U-splines retain many properties of splines in B-spline form including smoothness, polynomial reproduction, and evaluation by recurrence.
