Prototheca richardsi is a protist of uncertain taxonomy which mediates growth inhibition in anuran larvae. Cells of P. richardsi were isolated from tadpole faeces and DNA was purified by Qiagen chromatography. Nuclear small-subunit (18S) rDNA (ssu-rDNA) was amplified by PCR using universal primers, cloned, and six clones (two from each of three separate isolates) were sequenced. All clones yiel...

Protothecosis is a potential zoonotic disease associated with bovine mastitis which can be transmitted to humans through contaminated milk. Considering the increasing prevalence of bovine mastitis due to Prototheca species, individual cow milk samples were analyzed using microbiological examination and biomolecular assay. Aspects related to health requirements for milk production, clinical and ...

Prototheca wickerhamii rarely causes systemic infection in humans but when it occurs, there are coexisting comorbidities. This case illustrated shows the manifestation of this opportunistic microorganism in an immunosuppressed patient. The patient was successfully treated with Liposomal amphotericin B with complete resolution of the lesions.

Mastitis in dairy herds can usually be brought under control by following the basic Program of the National Mastitis Council. Two points of this Program involve the use of antibiotics, one to treat clinical mastitis and the other to treat cows at the beginning of the nonlactating period. Antibiotic therapy, without identifying the mastitis causing organisms, is frequently the veterinarian and d...

In the microbiological investigation, made on samples of normal; (n=412) and mastitic (n=482) milk, proceeded from eight dairy cows farm, in Transilvania, it was signal the presence of the algae without chlorophyl belonging to Prototheca, forming together with bacteria and fungi the micro flora of the mammary gland. The alga content of normal milk was signaled only in two farms (2.27%, respecti...

The killer effect of 36 Hansenula, Pichia, Saccharomyces, and Candida species on 26 hyphomycetes isolates, 1 isolate of the achlorophyllous microorganism Prototheca, 4 isolates of the lipophilic yeast Malassezia, 1 isolate of the aerobic actinomycete Nocardia, and 19 isolates of bacteria was studied. The killer phenomenon, which was previously considered to be restricted to yeasts, was found to...

Data in the Caribbean documenting the speciation of yeast associated with vulvovaginitis are lacking. The widespread use of antibiotics and increased availability of antimycotic agents, both prescribed and over-the-counter, predisposes both to a change in the epidemiologic patterns and the possible development of secondary resistance among previously susceptible yeast. This study was conducted ...

An 81-year-old female presented with a three year history of painless, erythematous nodules on her right proximal forearm slow spread to the cubital fossa and distal upper arm. A 78-year-old six month isolated plaque. The patient had background medical inflammatory arthritis managed oral prednisone infliximab. In both cases calcofluor-white stain revealed organisms resembling Prototheca. Growth...
