This review traces the development of mammography physics over the last 50 years, concentrating mainly on technological changes and their inter-relations. It has been written for physicists with no specific mammography experience but a general interest in radiology, as much as for those with recent involvement in mammography. Topics covered include industrial film, xerography, intensifying scre...

The constantly workload increase has led to the development of Computerised Decision Support Systems (CDSS) for a better management of patient care. Many clinical situations have been investigated to verify the utility of CDSS: few have demonstrated stable effects. One area where success has been reported is the field of oral anticoagulation management. CDSS system has demonstrated to be able t...

Quantitative indicators are a common means of assessing the complex dimensions of a sustainable freshwater system, and framing scientific knowledge for policy and decision makers. There is an abundance of indicators in use, but considerable variation in terms of what is being measured and how indicators are applied, making it difficult for end-users to identify suitable assessment methods. We r...

Technologies for comprehensively understanding and quantifying antibody profiles to autoantigens and infectious agents may yield new insights into disease mechanisms and may elucidate new markers to substratify disease with different clinical features and better understand pathogenesis. We have developed a highly quantitative method called Luciferase Immunoprecipitation Systems (LIPS) for profi...

During the last fifteen years, semicarbazones have been extensively investigated for their anticonvulsant properties. 4-(4-Flurophenoxy) benzaldehyde semicarbazone (C0102862, V102862) was discovered as a lead molecule and is being developed as a potent antiepileptic drug, with maximal electroshock (MES) ED₅₀ of i.p. 12.9 mg kg⁻¹. In MES (oral screen), this compound has a protective index (PI = ...

CD4(+) T cells are prominent effector cells in controlling Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection but may also contribute to immunopathology. Studies probing the CD4(+) T cell response from individuals latently infected with Mtb or patients with active tuberculosis using either small or proteome-wide antigen screens so far revealed a multi-antigenic, yet mostly invariable repertoire of immu...

During infection, humoral immunity produces a polyclonal response with various immunoglobulins recognizing different epitopes within the microbe or toxin. Despite this diverse response, the biological activity of an antibody (Ab) is usually assessed by the action of a monoclonal population. We demonstrate that a combination of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that are individually disease enhancing...

Current drugs against the influenza A virus (IAV) act by inhibiting viral neuraminidase (NA) enzymes responsible for the release of budding virions from sialoglycans on infected cells. Here, we describe an approach focused on a search for inhibitors that reinforce the protective functions of mucosal barriers that trap viruses en route to the target cells. We have generated mimetics of sialo-gly...

Variable screen quality, off-target effects, and unclear false discovery rates often hamper large-scale functional genomic screens in mammalian cells. Hart et al (2014) introduce gold standard reference sets of essential and non-essential genes, aiming at standardizing the analysis of genome-wide screens. This work provides a framework to compare both the quality and analysis methods of functio...

A method to design Ronchi-Hartmann screens for improved alignment in the testing of fast plano-convex spherical lenses is presented. We design null screens that produce aligned straight fringes for observed patterns. The designs of these null screens are based on knowledge of the caustic by refraction. A qualitative test for a lens is presented.
