Hydrogen-bonds structure in poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) were investigated by means of temperature-dependent infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Spectral variations involved with the OH…OH and C=O…HO types of hydrogen-bonds were found around the glass transition temperature of 80°C. Hydrogen-bonds among the hydroxyl groups gradually dissociate with increasing temperature. In contrast, disc...

In this paper, we first provide an overview of the Mie type scattering at absorbing materials and existing correction methods, followed by a new method to obtain the pure absorbance spectra of biological systems with spherical symmetry. This method is a further development of the recently described iterative algorithm of van Dijk et al. The method is tested on FTIR synchrotron spectra of polyme...

We study systematically the topography behavior of PHEMA-b-PMMA block as a function of the PHEMA and PMMA block lengths after selectively collapsing the top (PMMA) block by using surface-anchored assemblies of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-b-methyl methacrylate), PHEMA-b-PMMA, block copolymer with orthogonally varying lengths of each block. Our experimental results are in excellent qualitati...

Site-specific chemical reactions following core excitation of poly-(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly-(isopropenyl acetate) (PiPAc) thin films were investigated. New x-ray absorption spectra of PMMA and PiPAc at the C and O K edges and theoretical spectra within the framework of density functional theory using model molecules were reported, and some new peak assignments were proposed for the...

Neurophysiological recording in alert monkeys requires the creation of a permanent aperture in the skull for repeated insertion of microelectrodes. Most laboratories use polymethyl methacrylate to attach a recording chamber over the skull opening. Here, we describe a titanium chamber that fastens to the skull with screws, using no polymethyl methacrylate. The gap between the base of the chamber...

An accurate method of the fluorescence probe approach based on an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecule (tetraphenylethylene) for measuring the solubility parameter of the polymer is reported. This method is distinctive in that the approach can make the polymer chain conformation in solution be related to the fluorescence intensity. Since the solubility parameter of the polymer is also cl...

As interest in using carbon nanotubes for developing biologically compatible systems continues to grow, biological inspiration is stimulating new directions for in vivo approaches. The ability to integrate nanotechnology-based systems in the body will provide greater successes if the implanted material is made to mimic elements of the biological milieu especially through tuning physical and che...

We report on craters formed by individual 3 MeV/u Au (q(ini)+) ions of selected incident charge states q_(ini) penetrating thin layers of poly(methyl methacrylate). Holes and raised regions are formed around the region of the impact, with sizes that depend strongly and differently on q_(ini). Variation of q_(ini) of the film thickness and of the angle of incidence allows us to extract informati...

The holographic recording characteristics of phenanthrenequinone- (PQ-) doped poly(methyl methacrylate) are investigated. The exposure sensitivity is characterized for single-hologram recording, and the M/# is measured for samples as thick as 3 mm. Optically induced birefringence is observed in this material.

In this work, the effect of seven different sample orientations from 0° to 90° on pilot and non-pilot ignition of PMMA (poly(methyl methacrylate)) exposed to radiation has been studied with experimental and numerical methods. Some new and significant conclusions are drawn from the study, including a U-shape curve of ignition time and critical mass flux as sample angle increases for pilot igniti...
