In a liquid-liquid interface bioreactor, fungal cells locate in a hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile microsphere layer on an aqueous-organic interface. In this article, effects of hydrophobicity of the interface on n-decane hydroxylation activity of Monilliera sp. NAP 00702 was examined. (-)-4-Decanol production was significantly enhanced to 132% by addition of polytetrafluoroethylene.

We utilize a Monte Carlo simulation scheme based on the bond fluctuation model to simulate settlement of adhesive particles onto sinusoidally corrugated substrates. The particles are composed of a hard inner core with either an effective potential shell or a "soft" adhesive shell made of flexible arms attached to the particle surface. These chains adhere via either the effective potential shell...

Chitinase is an enzyme used by insects to degrade the structural polysaccharide, chitin, during the molting process. Tryptophan 145 (W145) of Manduca sexta (tobacco hornworm) chitinase is a highly conserved residue found within a second conserved region of family 18 chitinases. It is located between aspartate 144 (D144) and glutamate 146 (E146), which are putative catalytic residues. The role o...

Plasma-activated polymer–polymer bonding is a promising way of encapsulating microand nano-fluidic channels across large substrate areas, without the substantial distortion of channel geometries that can plague thermallyand solvent-assisted bonding. The process involves treating the surfaces to be bonded with an oxygen or air plasma, and then pressing the surfaces together to allow an irreversi...

Zeta potential data are reviewed for a variety of polymeric microfluidic substrate materials. Many of these materials currently used for microchip fabrication have only recently been employed for generation of electroosmotic flow. Despite their recent history, polymeric microfluidic substrates are currently used extensively for microchip separations and other techniques, and understanding of th...

Electrospinning is known as a fabrication technique for electrode architectures that serve as immobilization matrices for biomolecules. The current work demonstrates a novel approach to construct a conductive polymeric platform, capable not only of immobilization, but also of electrical connection of the biomolecule with the electrode. It is produced upon electrospinning from mixtures of three ...

the accurate prediction of protein stability is one of the most challenging goals in protein formulation and delivery. in this study, a gradient rp-hplc method is described for the separation of human growth hormone (hgh) variants as deamidated and oxidized forms. the methodology employed a polymeric poly (styrene-co-divinylbenzene) column and a 1ml/min flow rate of a linear gradient of 0.1% v/...
