India being a tropical country, parasitic infections especially with Plasmodium species are very common in this region. The present case report is that of Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium falciparum and dengue co-infection in a 6 months pregnant lady who was timely diagnosed and appropriately treated followed by a complete recovery along with feto-maternal well-being.

Malaria is a disease caused by parasites from genus Plasmodium , a member of the Apicomplexan family. Apicomplexans are unique in that they are the only fully parasitic large clade on the tree of life. It is thought that every type of mammal, bird, and reptile is parasitized by at least one species of Plasmodium (Morrison 2009 ) . Five Plasmodium species infect humans: Plasmodium falciparum , P...

BACKGROUND Plasmodium and soil transmitted helminth infections (STH) are a major public health problem, particularly among children. There are conflicting findings on potential association between these two parasites. This study investigated the Plasmodium and helminth co-infections among children aged 2 months to 9 years living in Bagamoyo district, coastal region of Tanzania. METHODS A comm...

Plasmodium falciparum, the protozoan parasite causing falciparum malaria, is undoubtedly highly versatile when it comes to survival and defence strategies. Strategies adopted by the asexual blood stages of Plasmodium range from unique pathways of nutrient uptake to immune evasion strategies and multiple drug resistance. Studying the survival strategies of Plasmodium could help us envisage strat...

A recent publication of genome and expression analyses of the murine parasites Plasmodium chabaudi chabaudi and Plasmodium berghei presents the state of the art in Plasmodium systems biology. By integrating genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics, the authors can classify and annotate genes by their expression profiles and can even detect evidence of posttranscriptional gene silencing in the m...

After ingestion by mosquitoes, malaria parasites fertilize in the midgut and develop into motile ookinetes, which penetrate the chitin-containing peritrophic matrix and midgut epithelium cells to develop into oocysts . Chitinase activity is critical for ookinetes to penetrate the peritrophic matrix. Recently, genes encoding chitinases were identified in Plasmodium gallinaceum (pgcht1), Plasmodi...

The phylogenetic relationships among hemosporidian parasites, including the origin of Plasmodium falciparum, the most virulent malaria parasite of humans, have been heavily debated for decades. Studies based on multiple-gene sequences have helped settle many of these controversial phylogenetic issues. However, denser taxon sampling and genome-wide analyses are needed to confidently resolve the ...

BACKGROUND Malaria is well known for its fatalities worldwide, Plasmodium vivax and the Plasmodium falciparum are the two important species of malaria reported from Pakistan and creating lots of morbidities across the country. METHOD Study was conducted to determine the Surveillance of malaria in South Punjab by microscopy and Polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULT samples out of 100 patie...

Ubiquitin-dependent protein degradation within malarial parasites is a burgeoning field of interest due to several encouraging reports of proteasome inhibitors that were able to confer antimalarial activity. Despite the growing interest in the Plasmodium proteasome system, relatively little investigation has been done to actually characterize the parasite degradation machinery. In this report, ...

African great apes are naturally infected by a multitude of Plasmodium species most of them recently discovered, among which several are closely related to human malaria agents. However, it is still unknown whether these animals can serve as source of infections for humans living in their vicinity. To evaluate this possibility, we analysed the nature of Plasmodium infections from a bank of 4281...
