In this year’s Phase II photoelectrochemical hydrogen production research at the University of Hawaii, we have continued our emphasis on developing high-performance multi-junction hydrogen photoelectrodes based on low cost semiconductor and catalyst films. Significant progress was made in the advancement of amorphous silicon/germanium and copper indium gallium diselenide materials for solid-sta...

Four new fluorescent derivatives of cholic acid have been synthesized; they incorporate a dansyl moiety at 3alpha-, 3beta-, 7alpha- or 7beta- positions. These cholic acid analogs are UV photoactive and also exhibit green fluorescence. In addition, they have been demonstrated to be suitable for studying the kinetics of bile acid transport by flow cytometry.

We present a new molecular shuttle, consisting of a calixarene core attached to two different photoactive centers, DCM and DMABN. We show that a K(+) ion bound to the DCM-grafted crown is translocated towards the other site of the molecule upon photoexcitation, but not released to the bulk.

Cu3G is a Cu(II) complex of a photoactive tetradentate ligand that is cleaved upon UV irradiation to release Cu. Here we show that the cytotoxicity of Cu3G increases in response to brief UV stimulation to result in extensive cytoplasmic vacuolization that is indicative of nonapoptotic cell death.

The phytochrome holoprotein of plants requires a covalently bound linear tetrapyrrole (bilin) prosthetic group for its photoreceptor function. Here we show that synthetic phytochrome apoprotein prepared by transcription and translation of an Avena phytochrome cDNA construct combines in vitro with phycocyanobilin, an analog of the natural chromophore, to produce a photoactive holoprotein. These ...

A nanovehicle with a new photoactive moiety has been synthesized. The incorporation of the azobenzene chassis allows for potential wormlike movement accompanying the rolling behavior of the wheels. Two versions, the fullerene-wheeled and carborane-wheeled nanoworms, were synthesized to examine the solution-based photoisomerization yields of the chassis.

A solid-state photocapacitor is prepared, utilizing iron pyrite (FeS2) as both the photoactive material and blocking electrode, which exhibits a high performance near-infrared (NIR) photodetectivity of 1.6 × 10(11) Jones, an energy density of 1.13 × 10(4) J g(-1) and a specific capacitance of 37.5 mA h g(-1) directly charged by sunlight.

Charge carrier transport through organic solar cells is fundamentally dispersive due to the disordered structure and complex film morphology within the photoactive layer. A novel application of transient photocurrent and short-circuit variable time-delayed collection field measurements is used to reconstruct the complete charge carrier mobility distribution for the photogenerated carriers in op...

A novel zinc(II) phthalocyanine bearing octa-sulphonates has been prepared, which is non-aggregated in water, highly photoactive and low dark-toxic. More interestingly, it exhibits specific affinity to macrophages via the scavenger receptor-A, and can selectively accumulate in tumour sites.
