A 16-element movement sequence was taught under part-whole and whole-practice conditions. Participants (N = 18) produced a right-arm lever movement to sequentially presented target locations. The authors constructed part-whole practice by providing practice on only the 1st 8 elements on the 1st day of practice (100 repetitions of the 8-element sequence) and on all 16 elements on the 2nd day of ...
Representing part-whole relations and effectively using them in domain ontologies and conceptual data models poses multiple challenges. In this paper we face the issue of imposing temporal constraints on part-whole relationships, introducing a way to account for essential and immutable parts (and wholes) in addition to the usual mandatory parts (and wholes). Our approach is based on i) an expli...
In this paper we describe a method for finding part-whole relations. The method consists of two steps: (i) finding phrase patterns for both explicit and implicit part-whole relations, and (ii) applying these patterns to find part-whole relation instances. We show results of applying this method to a domain of finding sources of carcinogens.
Introduction Expressive power and deductive power are two critical characteristics of knowledge representation languages. They capture respectively, what information can be explicitly stated, and what information can be deduced. Object (class) based representations have gained almost universal acceptance because of their ability to capture inter-class associations and their implied ability to r...
Among attributes, a fundamental role is often played by various forms of part-whole relations, which contribute to describe the structure of composite objects. The representation of such a structural information usually requires a particular semantics together with specialized inference, but rarely do current modeling formalisms and methodologies give it a specific, "first-class" dignity [Simon...
This is a brief overview of formal theories concerned with the study of the notions of (and the relations between) parts and wholes. The guiding idea is that we can distinguish between a theory of parthood (mereology) and a theory of wholeness (holology, which is essentially afforded by topology), and the main question examined is how these two theories can be combined to obtain a unified theor...
Categorization relies upon the vocabulary of features that comprise the target objects. Previous theoretical work (Schyns, Goldstone, & Thibaut, 1998) has argued this vocabulary may change through learning and experience. Goldstone (2000) demonstrated this perceptual learning during a categorization task when new features are added that create a single feature unit from multiple existing units....
Many categories of Part-whole relationships have been analyzed earlier. Existing Part-Whole Taxonomies include some form of dependency classifier to account for dependency of whole on the parts. It is shown that the existing notions of dependency partially overlap and are also inadequate. The notion of logical dependency is introduced and it is unified with existing dependency classifier to obt...
A taxonomy of port-whole or meronymic relations is developed to explain the ordinary English-speaker’s use of the term “part of” and its cognates. The resulting clossificotion yields six types of meronymic relotions: 1. component-integral object (pedal-bike). 2. member-collection (ship-fleet), 3. portion-mass (slice-pie), 4. stuff-object (steel-car). 5. feature-activity (poying-shopping), and 6...
