OBJECTIVES Photoangiolytic lasers effectively treat glottal papillomatosis, but do not reliably prevent recurrence. Therefore, sublesional injections of the antiangiogenic agent bevacizumab (Avastin) were given to assess the effect on disease recurrence and phonatory function. METHODS A retrospective investigation was done in a pilot group of 10 adult patients with bilateral glottal papilloma...

Juvenile recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (JRRP) is a rare condition. The varied presentation of this condition predisposes to misdiagnosis and potential life-threatening airway obstruction. In this paper, we have reported a case of JRRP presenting as severe respiratory distress and consequently mistreated as asthmatic attack culminating in a near fatal acute airway obstruction.

Human papillomaviruses types 6 or 11 are aetiological agents of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, a disease characterized by benign exophytic tumours usually on the vocal cords. Surgery debulks the tumours, but these growths generally recur at regular intervals. Adjunct medical treatments, aimed at containing the virus and growth of tumours, include indole-3-carbinol or its dimer diindolylm...

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)-6 and -11 are the causative agents of ano-genital warts (GWs) and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). They are low-risk HPV types that are uncommonly found in malignant lesions. GWs are an extremely prevalent sexually transmitted disease, whereas RRP is a rare disease that can be life threatening and requires multiple surgical procedures. GWs and RRP cause sub...

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis is a rare, but devastating, cause of airway lesions in children and adults. This disease is caused by human papilloma virus subtypes 6 and 11. At this time there are two vaccines in late stages of development seeking Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to prevent cervical cancer, which is also caused by human papilloma virus. Thirty laryngeal carcinomas from patients without pre-existing laryngeal papillomatosis were examined by PCR for the presence of HPV DNA. The utmost care was taken during sectioning of the tissue blocks and DNA-extraction in order to avoid false positive results. Three pairs of consensus primers were used: MY9/MY11, GP51/GP61 and CPI/CPII. HPV was detected in 1/30 carcinomas. The HPV type prese...

Laryngeal papillomatosis has a high rate of recurrence after surgery. Narrow band imaging (NBI) is a novel optical enhancement technology used for the diagnosis. This is the first report to date to indicate the availability of the combination of laryngomicro surgery and videoendoscopic surgery for laryngeal papillomatosis using NBI technology. The patients were a 34-year-old man and a 30-year-o...
