A transcutaneous oxygen sensor was used to detect the development of hypoxemia in patients undergoing fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Measurements of transcutaneous PO2 (tcPO2) correlated well with arterial PO2 (PaO2), and correctly detected all instances when PaO2 was less than 65 mm Hg. The sensor was noninvasive and caused no adverse effects.
OBJECTIVE To assess clinical signs and management of primary blast lung injury (BLI) from explosions in an enclosed space and to propose a BLI severity scoring system. DESIGN Retrospective analysis. PATIENTS Fifteen patients with primary BLI resulting from explosions on two civilian buses in 1996. RESULTS Ten patients were extremely hypoxemic on admission (PaO2 < 65 mm Hg with oxygen supp...
Because hydroxyzine hydrochloride is frequently used to tranquilize patients, who are receiving narcotic analgesics for pain relief, its effect alone and in combination with meperidine on arterial blood gases and ventilation in patients at rest was evaluated in 65 healthy volunteers, who gave informed consent. Hydroxyzine hydrochloride, 1.5 mg/kg IV given over 30 seconds, caused no decrease but...
To test the hypothesis that pulmonary alterations are more important than hemodynamic changes in alpha2-agonist-induced hypoxemia in ruminants, the cardiopulmonary effects of incremental doses of (4-[1-(2,3-dimethylphenyl)ethyl]-1H-imadazole) hydrochloride (medetomidine; 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4 micrograms/kg) and 2-(2, 6-diethylphenylamino)-2-imidazol (ST-91; 1.5, 3.0, 6.0, and 12 micrograms/kg) w...
BACKGROUND Improperly set mechanical ventilation (MV) with normal lungs can advance lung injury and increase the incidence of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A key mechanism of ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) is an alteration in alveolar mechanics including alveolar instability or recruitment/derecruitment (R/D). We hypothesize that R/D cannot be identified by PaO2 (masking oc...
BACKGROUND Chronic cor pulmonale (CCP) is a strong predictor of death in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aims of this study were to assess the prognostic role of individual ECG signs of CCP and of the interaction between these signs and abnormal arterial blood gases. METHODS AND RESULTS Two hundred sixty-three patients (217 men) with COPD, mean age 67+/-9 years, were grouped...
Two hundred and thirty one patients awaiting elective surgery were divided on the basis of spirometric examination into normal (group A) and those with increased airway resistance (group B). The mean arterial oxygen tension.for the 151 normal subjects was 96-3 (±11-6) mm. Hg. There was a significant inverse correlation of Pao2 with age and dynamic lung volumes. The 80 patients in group B were s...
introduction: arterial gas derangement could change urinary sodium excretion in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd) patients.there are very few and conflicting data in regards to the measurement of fractional excretion of sodium in copd patients. the main aim of this study was to assess the relationship between renal fractional excretion of sodium(fena) with arterial blood gas and spir...
