The authors demonstrate an optical buffer architecture which is implemented using quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifiers (QD-SOAs) in order to achieve wavelength conversion with regenerative capabilities, for all optical packet switched networks. The architecture consists of cascaded programmable delay stages that minimise the number of wavelength converters required to implement the buff...
We build a forward error correction (FEC) module and implement it in an optical signal processing experiment. The experiment consists of two cascaded nonlinear optical signal processes, 160 Gbit/s all optical wavelength conversion based on the cross phase modulation (XPM) in a silicon nanowire and subsequent 160 Gbit/s-to-10 Gbit/s demultiplexing in a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). The XPM base...
After a short introduction to the different requirements to and techniques for wavelength conversion, focus is on cross-gain and cross-phase modulation in SOA based converters. Aspects like jitter accumulation, regeneration and conversion to the same wavelength is discussed. It is predicted that jitter accumulation can be minimised while also assuring a high extinction ratio by using a 9–10 dB ...
Fluorescent guest molecules doped in polymers have been used to convert ultraviolet light into visible light for applications ranging from optical fibres to filters for the cultivation of plants. The wavelength conversion process involves the absorption of light at short wavelengths followed by fluorescence emission at a longer wavelength. However, a precise understanding of the light conversio...
Bit-Error-Rate Characterization of Silicon Four-Wave- Mixing Wavelength Converters at 10 and 40 Gb/s
We present the first bit-error-rate characterization of silicon four-wave-mixing wavelength converters. Power penalties below 0.5 dB are demonstrated over a 20-nm EDFA-limited wavelength range at 10 Gb/s, while 40-Gb/s measurements yield a 2.4-dB power penalty. ©2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (130.7405) Wavelength conversion devices; (190.4380) Nonlinear optics, four-wave mixing
In wavelength division multiplexed all optical networks; lightpath establishes a connection between sending and receiving nodes bypassing the electronic processing at intermediate nodes. One of the prime objectives of Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) problem is to maximize the number of connections efficiently by choosing the best routes. Although there are several algorithms available, ...
The paper proposes an all-optical 1×M router architecture based on pulse-positionmodulation header processing (PPM-HP) scheme for packet routing in all-optical highspeed wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) packet switching network. The router is mainly comprised of all-optical clock extraction, pulse-position-modulation header extraction, continuous-wave (CW) sources, wavelength conversion m...
In traditional lambda-based multigranularity optical networks, a lambda is always treated as the basic routing unit, resulting in low wavelength utilization. On the basis of optical code division multiplexing (OCDM) technology, a novel OCDM-based multigranularity optical cross-connect (MG-OXC) is proposed. Compared with the traditional lambda-based MG-OXC, its switching capability has been exte...
The bandwidth of a single-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier is governed by the even orders of fiber dispersion at the pump wavelength. The amplifier can exhibit gain over a wide wavelength range when operated near the fiber's zero-dispersion wavelength. It can also be used for broadband wavelength conversion, with gain. We have experimentally obtained gain of 10-18 dB as the signal wavelen...
