Kevin J. Moon A digital realisation of two-dimensional self-organising feature maps is presented. The method is based on subspace classification using an n-tuple technique. Weight vector approximation and orthogonal projections to produce a winnertakes-all network are also discussed. Over one million effective binary weights can be applied in 25ms using a conventional microcomputer. Details of ...

We demonstrate use of the modulation transfer function method in the spectral domain for dynamic measurement of the spectral resolution and modulation contrast of acousto-optic light dispersive delay lines and programmable filters with synthesized transmission. The method is useful for performance characterization of acousto-optic devices for ultrafast pulse shaping and adaptive spectroscopy.

We report graphene nanopores with integrated optical antennae. We demonstrate that a nanometer-sized heated spot created by photon-to-heat conversion of a gold nanorod resting on a graphene membrane forms a nanoscale pore with a self-integrated optical antenna in a single step. The distinct plasmonic traits of metal nanoparticles, which have a unique capability to concentrate light into nanosca...

Optical forces resulting from interacting modes and cavities can scale to remarkably large values as the optical modes shrink to nanometre dimensions. Such forces can be harnessed in fundamentally new ways when optical elements can freely adapt to them. Here, we propose the use of optomechanically coupled resonators as a general means of tailoring optomechanical potentials through the action of...

Image analysis in the visual system is well adapted to the statistics of natural scenes. Investigations of natural image statistics have so far mainly focused on static features. We present a method to investigate the statistics of natural optic flow fields related to self-motion within natural scenes and present first results of a statistical analysis.

Flow cytometry is a technique that is used to count cells and to characterize property of the cells. In spite of enormous information content on the cells provided by flow cytometry, cytometry data is still analyzed based on stepby-step gating, either manually or automatically via bioinformatics. This paper presents a new strategy of interpreting cytometry data in a different manner. The propos...

teachers beliefs have usually been left unattended in the realm of educational research in iranian context. one of those beliefs which seems to impact teachers performance in the classroom is their sense of self-efficacy, which refers to teachers belief in their ability to enhance student achievement and in bringing about positive learning outcomes. the present study aimed to investigate the pr...

Pure all-optical packet-switched networks in which both header processing and packet routing are carried out in the optical domain overcome the bandwidth bottlenecks of optoelectronic conversions and therefore are expected to meet the needs of next generation high speed networks. Due to the limited capabilities of available optical logic devices, realizations of pure all-optical packet-switched...

We study spatially localized optical vortices created by self-trapping of partially incoherent light with a phase dislocation in a biased photorefractive crystal. In contrast to a decay of coherent self-trapped vortex beams due to the azimuthal modulational instability, the incoherent vortices are stabilized for large values of the spatial incoherence; this was confirmed by experiment. We analy...

Design, fabrication, and characterization of the disposable integrated microfluidic devices with self-aligned planar microlenses for the applications of bioanalytical system are described. The development of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based disposable integrated microfluidics is realized by the monolithic integration of self-aligned two-dimensional (2D) planar micro-optics with microfluidi...
