According to military documents, the incidence of ocular injuries significantly increases. Intraocular foreign body (IOFB) is one of the ocular damages that seriously threats vision. Many ocular injuries occurred in a war between Iran and Iraq from 1980 to 1988. The aim of the present study was to review ocular damages made by IOFB in this war, different methods of treatment and their prognosis.

AIMS The present report was aimed at finding out whether gammaglobulin could have a role in treating ocular Behçet's disease (BD) refractory to accepted medical therapy. METHODS Six eyes of four patients with ocular BD refractory to steroids and cyclosporin A were treated with a course of intravenous gammaglobulin and followed up for their response to treatment. RESULTS All six eyes of all ...

In the present study the optokinetic reflex, vestibulo-ocular reflex and their interaction were investigated in the mouse, using a modified subconjunctival search coil technique. Gain of the ocular response to sinusoidal optokinetic stimulation was relatively constant for peak velocities lower than 8 degrees /s, ranging from 0.7 to 0.8. Gain decreased proportionally to velocity for faster stimu...

The paper describes a morphological analyser for Estonian and how using a text corpus influenced the process of creating it and the resulting program itself. The influence is not limited with the lexicon only, but is noticeable in the resulting algorithm and implementation too. When work on the analyser started, there was no computational treatment of Estonian derivatives and compounds. After s...

This paper presents the design and development of a system for the detection and correction of syntactic errors in free texts. The system is composed of three main modules: a) a robust syntactic analyser, b) a compiler that will translate error processing rules, and c) a module that coordinates the results of the analyser, applying different combinations of the already compiled error rules. The...

A non-linear network is proposed for simulating the response of electrochemical cells in differential-pulse polarographic (DPP) analysis. The response of a DPP analyser connected to the dummy cell is a bell-shaped current peak (I(p)) located at any desired point along the potential-scan range. Approximate model calculations of the expected I(p), as a function of the dummy-cell parameters are in...

Respiratory gas analysis has now become a standard monitoring technique in anaesthesia: in theatres, intensive care unit, and for the transfer of ventilated patients. The AAGBI Recommendations for Standards of Monitoring during Anaesthesia and Recovery (2007) recommend as essential components during an anaesthetic an oxygen analyser with an audible alarm and a carbon dioxide analyser; a vapour ...

Recurrent or persistent infections with Chlamydia trachomatis are thought to provide the antigenic stimulus for the chronic inflammation associated with blinding trachoma. We used the guinea pig model of inclusion conjunctivitis to identify chlamydial antigens that may be involved in this deleterious immune response. We purified from chlamydial elementary bodies a genus-specific 57-kD protein t...

Swimming and training are carried out with wide variability in distances and intensities. However, oxygen uptake kinetics for the intensities seen in swimming has not been reported. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the oxygen uptake kinetics throughout low-moderate to severe intensities during incremental swimming exercise. We hypothesized that the oxygen uptake kinetic param...

NEW FINDINGS What is the central question of this study? Do the mechanical differences between swimming, rowing, running and cycling have a potential effect on the oxygen uptake (V̇O2) off-kinetics after an exercise sustained until exhaustion at 100% of maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) intensity? What is the main finding and its importance? The mechanical differences between exercise modes had a p...
