Mutant and normal Xenopus laevis embryos (o-nu, i-nu, 2-nu) were examined in the electron microscope after glutaraldehyde and/or osmium-tetroxide fixation. During cleavage both o-nu and wild-type embryos contain multiple small nucleolar bodies, less than 1 ft in diameter, composed mainly of a fibrous material. By the end of cleavage or beginning of gastrulation, granular caps develop on the fib...

We investigate how different microscopic interactions between semiflexible chain segments can qualitatively alter the physical properties of the condensed toroid. We propose a general form of the Hamiltonian of the toroid and discuss its analytic properties. For different interactions, the theory predicts different scaling behaviors of the mean toroidal and cross sectional radii, rc and rcross,...

The in vivo importance of class I MHC regulation of the Tc response to a natural pathogenic agent of high virulence was studied on the basis of our previous demonstration of a major difference in the capacity to generate a Sendai virus-specific Tc response between C57BL/6 (B6, H-2b) mice and H-2Kb mutant B6.C-H-2bm1 (bm 1) mice. These two mouse strains differ from each other only in three amino...

Infrared spectra of N(2)O trimers are studied using a tunable diode laser to probe a pulsed supersonic slit-jet expansion. A previous observation by Miller and Pedersen [J. Chem. Phys. 108, 436 (1998)] in the N(2)O nu(1)+nu(3) combination band region ( approximately 3480 cm(-1)) showed the trimer structure to be noncyclic, with three inequivalent N(2)O monomer units which could be thought of as...

The results are reported of a theoretical study of the addition of small nucleophiles Nu(-) (HO(-), F(-)) to phenylboronic acid Ph-B(OH)(2) and of the stability of the resulting complexes [Ph-B(OH)(2)Nu](-) with regard to Ph-B heterolysis [Ph-B(OH)(2)Nu](-) --> Ph(-) + B(OH)(2)Nu as well as Nu(-)/Ph(-) substitution [Ph-B(OH)(2)Nu](-) + Nu(-) --> Ph(-) + [B(OH)(2)Nu(2)](-). These reactions are o...

We discuss the relation between epsilon-support vector regression (epsilon-SVR) and nu-support vector regression (nu-SVR). In particular, we focus on properties that are different from those of C-support vector classification (C-SVC) and nu-support vector classification (nu-SVC). We then discuss some issues that do not occur in the case of classification: the possible range of epsilon and the s...

KamLAND has measured the flux of nu;(e)'s from distant nuclear reactors. We find fewer nu;(e) events than expected from standard assumptions about nu;(e) propagation at the 99.95% C.L. In a 162 ton.yr exposure the ratio of the observed inverse beta-decay events to the expected number without nu;(e) disappearance is 0.611+/-0.085(stat)+/-0.041(syst) for nu;(e) energies >3.4 MeV. In the context o...
