Optical reorientational nonlinearity in twisted nematic liquid crystalline planar waveguide is analyzed theoretically. It is shown that optical nonlinearity for guided modes in analyzed waveguides can be approximated by saturation nonlinearity. Predicted nonlinearity is large enough to observe e¤ects like spatial solitons formation with milliwatts of light power. PACS: 42.65.Wi, 42.70.Df

We investigate the security of n-bit to m-bit vectorial Boolean functions in stream ciphers. Such stream ciphers have higher throughput than those using single-bit output Boolean functions. However, as shown by Zhang and Chan at Crypto 2000, linear approximations based on composing the vector output with any Boolean functions have higher bias than those based on the usual correlation attack. In...

In the field of microgrids (MGs), steady-state power imbalances and frequency/voltage fluctuations in transient state have been gaining prominence owing to advancing distributed energy resources (DERs) connected MGs via grid-connected inverters. Because a stable, safe supply demand must be maintained, accurate analyses system dynamics are crucial. However, natural frequency components present m...

Quantitative measures of the nonlinearity of an analytical method are defined as follows: the "(dimensional) nonlinearity" of a method is the square root of the mean of the square of the deviation of the response curve from a straight line, where the straight line is chosen to minimize the nonlinearity. The "relative nonlinearity" is defined as the dimensional nonlinearity divided by the differ...

Both the forward and backward kinematics of the Gough-Stewart mechanism exhibit nonlinear behavior. It is critically important to take account of this nonlinearity in some applications such as path control in parallel kinematics machine tools. The nonlinearity of inverse kinematics is straightforward and has been first studied in this paper. However the nonlinearity of forward kinematics is mor...
