Candida spp is associated to almost 80% of all nosocomial fungal infections and is considered a major cause of blood stream infections. Candida spp is the fourth most common cause of blood stream infections in the United States, where this agent is responsible for 8% of all invasive infections documented in this site. At the present, non-albicans species are related to at least 50% of all invas...

Invasive fungal infections are important causes of morbidity and attributable mortality in neutropenic patients with hematological malignancies, myelodysplasia, and aplastic anemia. Successful risk-based strategies can be implemented for prophylaxis, empirical therapy, and preemptive therapy for the prevention and early treatment of invasive fungal infections in neutropenic hosts. The use of ec...

Background: Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is an important health problem caused by Candida spp. The aim of this study was molecular identification, phylogenetic analysis, and evaluation of antifungal susceptibility of non-albicans Candida isolates from VVC. Methods: Vaginal secretion samples were collected from 550 vaginitis patients at Sayyad Shirazi Medical and Educational Center of Gorgan (...

We assessed the in vitro activity of micafungin against preformed Candida biofilms by measuring the concentration of drug causing the most fungal damage and inhibition of regrowth. We studied 37 biofilm-producing Candida spp. strains from blood cultures. We showed that micafungin was active against planktonic and sessile forms of Candida albicans strains and moderately active against Candida pa...

Candidemia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in cancer patients. The incidence of candidemia has been reported to have shifted toward nonalbicans species. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of Candida species resulting in bloodstream infections or catheter-related blood stream infections (CRBSIs) in pediatric hematology-oncology (PHO) patients over a 7-year-p...

PURPOSE The prevalence of Candida infections has been rising with an increasingly aging population and a larger population of immunocompromised individuals. The use of probiotics may be an alternative approach to antifungal agents in the prevention and treatment of oral candidiasis. This study aimed to evaluate the short-term effect of probiotics in reducing the infection level of oral Candida ...

BACKGROUND Penetrating wounds with environmental contamination are associated with a range of infectious complications, including fungus. This is the first study to examine the epidemiology, resistance patterns, and outcomes of Candida infections and colonization in United States military patients injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. METHODS Clinical information associated with initial unique and...

Candidemia was simulated with 15 Candida spp. by using an automated blood culture system. Candida growth was detected in 479/648 (74%) bottles: 211/216 (98%) aerobic bottles, 58/216 (27%) anaerobic bottles, and 210/216 (97%) mycology bottles. Only the growth of Candida lipolytica failed to be detected in all media.

Secretion of hydrolytic enzymes is considered a virulence factor in Candida spp. Extracellular enzymatic activities in 29 clinical isolates of Candida tropicalis were analyzed by plate assays. C. tropicalis, similar to Candida albicans, showed elevated hemolytic and esterase activities. However, unlike C. albicans, low aspartyl protease and very low phospholipase activities were detected in C. ...
