Diamictites, especially those deposited before the break-up of Gondwana in the Late Carboniferous and Permian, have recently been suggested to represent ejecta deposits from large comet or meteorite impact events. This is in contrast to the commonly held interpretation that these rocks represent glaciomarine sedimentary deposits. To test this controversial hypothesis, we carried out a detailed ...

Why standardise outcomes? The design of new trials would be simplified, the risk of measuring inappropriate outcomes would be reduced, and selective reporting of outcomes less likely. It would be easier to compare, contrast and combine studies in systematic reviews. Core outcome sets would help review authors to present their findings clearly and succinctly, for example within Summary of Findin...

Photoionization of neutral molecules in the coma surrounding a comet produces heavy ions which contaminate and mass-load the solar wind. Cometary ion distribution functions in the vicinity of comet Giacobini-Zinner (G/Z) are calculated using a Monte Carlo method. The distribution function calculated behind the shock has both cold (= 2 keV) and hot (-40 keV) components.

Assessment of zinc status remains a challenge largely because serum/plasma zinc may not accurately reflect an individual's zinc status. The comet assay, a sensitive method capable of detecting intracellular DNA strand breaks, may serve as a functional biomarker of zinc status. We hypothesized that effects of zinc supplementation on intracellular DNA damage could be assessed from samples collect...

The comet assay has become a popular method for the assessment of DNA damage in biomonitoring studies and genetic toxicology. However, few studies have addressed the issue of the noted inter-laboratory variability of DNA damage measured by the comet assay. In this study, 12 laboratories analysed the level of DNA damage in monocyte-derived THP-1 cells by either visual classification or computer-...

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. As infectious diseases can cause DNA damage, the authors aimed at analyzing DNA breakage in peripheral blood cells of patients with paracoccidioidomycosis by using the comet assay. The results suggested that paracoccidioidomycosis does not cause genotoxicity. Key-words: Paracoccidioidomycosis. Paracoc...

The comet assay is a valuable experimental tool aimed at mapping DNA damage in human cells in vivo for environmental and occupational monitoring, as well as for therapeutic purposes, such as storage prior to transplant, during tissue engineering, and in experimental ex vivo assays. Furthermore, due to its great versatility, the comet assay allows to explore the use of alternative cell types to ...

This study demonstrates, by using neutral comet assay and pulsed field gel electrophoresis, that hyperosmotic stress causes DNA damage in the form of double strand breaks (dsb). Different solutes increase the rate of DNA dsb to different degrees at identical strengths of hyperosmolality. Hyperosmolality in the form of elevated NaCl (HNa) is most potent in this regard, whereas hyperosmolality in...

objective(s):there are a few previously reported studies about the effect of nigella sativa oil on renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (iri). the aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis whether pre- or post-treatment with n. sativa hydroalcoholic extract (nse) would reduce tissue injury and oxidative damages in a clinically relevant rat model of renal iri.    materials and methods: ir...
