BACKGROUND The availability of more effective treatments for severe lupus nephritis may have influenced the rate at which end-stage renal disease (ESRD) develops in these patients. OBJECTIVE To examine changes in the incidence of ESRD due to lupus nephritis from 1982 to 1995. METHODS All patients with incident ESRD included in the US Renal Data System from 1982 to 1995 were studied. The US ...

Immunoglobulin type gamma 4 (IgG4)-related disease is a relatively newly described clinical entity characterized by a distinctive histopathological appearance, increased numbers of IgG4 positive plasma cells and often, but not always, elevated serum IgG4 concentrations. The most common renal manifestation of IgG4-related disease is tubulointerstitial nephritis marked with proteinuria, hematuria...

BACKGROUND Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) cause interstitial nephritis and are an underappreciated cause of acute kidney injury. We examined the risk of acute kidney injury and acute interstitial nephritis in a large population of older patients receiving PPIs. METHODS We conducted a population-based study involving Ontario residents aged 66 years and older who initiated PPI therapy between Ap...

Objective To evaluate hypogammaglobulinaemia and risk of serious infectious adverse events in active lupus nephritis. Methods The Abatacept and Cyclophosphamide Combination Efficacy and Safety Study (ACCESS) compared abatacept with placebo in participants with lupus nephritis undergoing treatment with Euro-Lupus Nephritis low-dose cyclophosphamide. Serum IgG levels were assessed prior to init...

The aim of this study was to compare ongoing production of anti-C1q antibodies (anti-C1q) in peripheral blood with serum anti-C1q levels in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), especially in patients with nephritis. Using the ELISPOT technique for the detection of IgG and IgA anti-C1q production, 21 patients with active SLE were investigated. ELISAs for IgG and IgA anti-C1q were co...

Ki-67 expression in diffuse proliferative lupus nephritis, WHO Class IV, was compared against normal controls to establish that cellular proliferation is involved in the production of glomerular hypercellularity. Twenty-three histologically confirmed WHO Class IV lupus nephritis and 23 normal control renal tissue were immunohistochemically stained with a polyclonal antibody to Ki-67 (Dako) usin...

Previously we have shown that kallikreins (klks) play a renoprotective role in nephrotoxic serum induced nephritis. In this study, we have used mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as vehicles to deliver klks into the injured kidneys and have measured their therapeutic effect on experimental antibody induced nephritis and lupus nephritis. Human KLK-1 (hKLK1) gene was transduced into murine MSCs using ...

BACKGROUND/AIMS Crucial steps in the initiation of lupus nephritis are the deposition of (auto-)antibodies and consequent complement activation. In spite of aggressive treatment patients may develop terminal renal failure. Therefore, new treatment strategies are needed. In extension to our previously published data we here analyzed the potential renoprotective mechanisms of bortezomib (BZ) in e...

We report a case of acute tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome (TINU syndrome) in an elderly Indian woman. TINU is one of the rare causes of acute tubulo interstitial nephritis and is likely to be missed as there is often temporal gap between the appearance of the renal and ocular manifestations.
