The rates of pilin antigenic variation (Av) of two strains of Neisseria meningitidis were determined using an unbiased DNA sequencing assay. Strain MC58 underwent pilin Av at a rate similar to that of N. gonorrhoeae strain MS11 but lower than that of N. gonorrhoeae strain FA1090. Pilin Av was undetectable in strain FAM18.

We measured the activity of rosoxacin, fosfomycin, cefotiam, and spectinomycin against 51 isolates of beta-lactamase producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae, all of which were susceptible to each drug at sufficient concentrations. The development of strains of penicillinase producing N gonorrhoeae (PPNG) which are resistant to spectinomycin can therefore be avoided, as there are alternative drugs.

The performance characteristics of Neisseria gonorrhoeae multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis were evaluated, by comparison with N. gonorrhoeae multiantigen sequence typing and full-length porB sequence typing.
