Recently, we suggested a type of self-trapped optical beams that can propagate in a stable form in (2+1)D self-focusing Kerr media: Necklace-ring beams [M. Soljacic, S. Sears, and M. Segev, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 4851 (1998)]. These self-trapped necklaces slowly expand their ring diameter as they propagate as a result of a net radial force that adjacent "pearls" (azimuthal spots) exert on each ot...

Moving objects produce trajectories, which are stored in databases by means of finite samples of time-stamped locations. When also speed limitations in these sample points are known, beads [1, 6, 9] can be used to model the uncertainty about the object’s location in between sample points. In this setting, a query of particular interest, that has been studied in the literature of geographic info...

The round nucleoli of chick embryo myoblasts, when grown in a culture medium devoid of arginine, unravel in several days into 5-20 micro long, beaded strands termed nucleolar necklaces (NN). Addition of arginine reverses this change. The NN contain protein, RNA, and traces of DNA as determined cytochemically by enzyme digestion and by acridine-orange fluorescent staining. When a cell containing...

A musical scale can be viewed as a subsequence of notes taken from a chromatic sequence. Given integers (N,K) N > K we use particular integer partitions of N into K parts to construct distinguished scales. We show that a natural geometric realization of these scales results in maximal polygons.
