Thromboembolic diseases are increasing worldwide and always require anticoagulant therapy. We still need safer and more secure antithrombotic drugs than those presently available. Sulfated polysaccharides from marine organisms may constitute a new source for the development of such drugs. Investigation of these compounds usually attempts to reproduce the therapeutic effects of heparin. However,...

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are sulfated glycans capable of regulating various biological and medical functions. Heparin, heparan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, dermatan sulfate, keratan sulfate and hyaluronan are the principal classes of GAGs found in animals. Although GAGs are all composed of disaccharide repeating building blocks, the sulfation patterns and the composing alternating monosacchar...

Sulfated polysaccharides from marine algae are one of the commercially beneficial compounds with a range of pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. They are testified to be effective against free radicals and related health complications. This study aims to determine the antioxidant potential of the sulfated polysaccharide from Sargassum myriocystum, followed by its purification and structu...

Micro-scale isolation of sulfated glycopeptide from tissue was achieved by successive application of pronase digestion (Step 1), cetylpyridinium chloride-fractionation (Step 2), crude heparinase digestion or chondroitinase ABC digestion plus nitrous acid treatment (Step 3) and preparative cellulose acetate membrane-electrophoresis (Step 4). By this method, sulfated glycopeptide was obtained in ...

Lembehsterols A (1) and B (2), two novel sulfated sterols, were isolated from the marine sponge Petrosia strongylata. Both sterols showed inhibitory activity against thymidine phosphorylase, which is an enzyme related to angiogenesis in solid tumors. The structures of these sulfated sterols were established on the basis of chemical and physicochemical evidence.

Leguminous plants and bacteria from the family Rhizobiaceae form a symbiotic relationship, which culminates in novel plant structures called root nodules. The indeterminate symbiosis that forms between Sinorhizobium meliloti and alfalfa requires biosynthesis of Nod factor, a beta-1,4-linked lipochitooligosaccharide that contains an essential 6-O-sulfate modification. S. meliloti also produces s...

Rhizobium tropici is a broad host-range symbiont of Phaseolus vulgaris. This bacterium produces a mixture of sulfated and non-sulfated N-methylated pentameric nodulation (Nod) factors. To understand the genetic bases of the partial sulfation of R. tropici Nod factors, which might be involved in the broad host-range of this species, we introduced in R. tropici CFN299 the recombinant plasmid pGMI...

Sulfated polysaccharides constitute a large and complex group of macromolecules which possess a wide range of important biological properties. Many of them hold promise as new therapeutics, but determination of their blood levels during pharmacokinetic studies can be challenging. Heparin Red, a commercial mix-and-read fluorescence assay, has recently emerged as a tool in clinical drug developme...

Semi-automatic analysis of the repair process of a circular mechanical lesion of confluent human vascular endothelial cells in vitro was used to evaluate the contributions of cell migration and cell proliferation. Standard heparin added to culture medium that contained 30% human serum induced an inhibition of cell migration at the lesion margin during the first day after injury. Several sulfate...

Among the three main divisions of marine macroalgae (Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta), marine green algae are valuable sources of structurally diverse bioactive compounds and remain largely unexploited in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical areas. Recently, a great deal of interest has been developed to isolate novel sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) from marine green algae because of their nu...
