UNLABELLED Methimazole is an anti-thyroid drug commonly used to treat hyperthyroidism and is a relatively safe medication. Several side effects have been reported and usually develop within 3 months of therapy. Well-known adverse reactions include agranulocytosis, hepatitis, skin eruptions, and musculoskeletal complaints such as myalgia, arthralgia, and arthritis. So far, myositis secondary to ...
Background: The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM, myositis) are a heterogeneous group of chronic autoimmune disorders causing considerable physical and mental health impact. There is a lack of formalised guidance defining best practice for the management of myositis, contributing to inconsistent care provision and some patients feeling isolated and unsupported. To address these issues, w...
Epidemiology of lung involvement in autoimmune myositis Th e interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) encompass a large number of distinct disorders that are characterized by infl ammation and/or fi brosis involving the lung parenchyma. Th ese disorders result from a myriad of potential etiologies including medications, environmental exposures and autoimmune diseases such as myositis. Regardless of et...
Autoimmune myositis encompasses various myositis-overlap syndromes, each being identified by the presence of serum marker autoantibodies. We describe a novel myositis-overlap syndrome in 4 patients characterized by the presence of a unique immunologic marker, autoantibodies to nuclear pore complexes. The clinical phenotype was characterized by prominent myositis in association with erosive, ant...
Polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and inclusion body myositis, although immunopathologically distinct, share 3 dominant histological features: inflammation, fibrosis, and loss of muscle fibers. Progress in molecular immunology and immunogenetics has enhanced our understanding of these cellular processes. Based on the T-cell receptor gene rearrangement, the autoinvasive CD8+ T cells in polymyositis...
Patients with antisynthetase-positive interstitial lung disease (ILD) alone sometimes develop myositis during follow-up, but myasthenia gravis (MG) overlapping on antisynthetase syndrome is unusual. A 56-year-old woman with ILD and anti-EJ antibody treated for 8 years developed MG. Physicians should consider myositis and MG when patients develop muscle symptoms during follow-up.
