We develop a model of innovation that enables us to trace the interplay among three key dimensions of the innovation process: (i) demand of and (ii) supply for innovation, and (iii) technological capabilities available to generate innovation in the forms of products, processes, and services. Building on Triple Helix research, we use entropy statistics to elaborate an indicator of mutual informa...

Mutual Monitoring in Teams: Theory and Experimental Evidence on the Importance of Reciprocity Monitoring by peers is often an effective means of attenuating incentive problems. Most explanations of the efficacy of mutual monitoring rely either on small group size or on a version of the Folk theorem with repeated interactions which requires reasonably accurate public information concerning the b...

Roles of ecological processes in evolution are attracting much attention in evolutionary studies. Learning and niche construction are regarded as ecological processes that can affect the course of evolution directly or indirectly. However, the effects of mutual interactions between them on evolution are still poorly understood. Our purpose is to provide insight into the coevolutionary dynamics ...

A general framework of optimal eavesdropping on BB84 protocol was provided by Fuchs et al. [Phys. Rev. A, 1997]. An upper bound on mutual information was derived, which could be achieved by a specific type of interaction and the corresponding measurement. However, uniqueness of optimal interaction was posed as an unsolved problem there and it has remained open for almost two decades now. In thi...

Glaucoma is a serious worldwide disease whose treatment can be improved by early detection. As part of a new clinical approach this paper introduces some preliminary studies in the computerised detection of the disease. In particular we consider the problems of registering 3D laser data with a digital image. We introduce a new method based on windowed mutual information and show that it perform...

I will first discuss how social interactions organize, coordinate, and specialize as “artifacts,” tools; how these tools are not only for coordination but for achieving something, for some outcome (goal/function), for a collective work. In particular, I will argue that these artifacts specify (predict and prescribe) the mental contents of the participants, both in terms of beliefs and acceptanc...

Various mutual dust–dust interactions in complex plasmas, including the forces due to induced magnetic and electric moments of the grains are discussed. It is shown that the dipole short-range forces can be responsible for the formation of field-aligned chains. Such chains may incorporate a few tens of individual particles, as frequently observed in experiments.

The majority of the available rigid registration measures are based on a 2-dimensional histogram of corresponding grey-values in the registered images. This paper shows that these features are similar to a family of texture measures based on Grey Level Cooccurrence Matrices (GLCM). Features from the GLCM literature are compared to the current range of measures using images from the visible huma...

We consider the problem of semi-supervised bootstrap learning for scene categorization. Existing semi-supervised approaches are typically unreliable and face semantic drift because the learning task is under-constrained. This is primarily because they ignore the strong interactions that often exist between scene categories, such as the common attributes shared across categories as well as the a...

A voice to facial animation conversion system is presented in this paper. In particular the temporal structure of the multimodal speech is discussed. Mutual information and neural network training is used to estimate the optimal temporal scope for audio to video conversion.
