Easy fabrication and independent control of the internal and external morphologies of core-shell microparticles still remain challenging. Core-shell microparticle comprised of a previously unknown internal anisotropic structure and a spherical shell was fabricated by microfluidic-based emulsificaiton and photopolymerization. The interfacial and spatial 3D morphology of the anisotropic structure...

Growth characteristics of human connective tissue progenitor (CTP) cells were investigated on smooth and textured substrates, which were produced using MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) fabrication technology. Human bone marrow derived cells were cultured for 9 days under conditions promoting osteoblastic differentiation on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates comprising smooth (non-patte...

Development of smart materials with inherent damage sensing capabilities is of great interest to aerospace and other structural applications. Most of the existing smart materials are based on using embedded sensors for structural health monitoring. However, embedded sensors can lead to undesirable effects such as stress concentration and can cause premature failure. Therefore, using microstruct...

An ultrasound-assisted, precipitation-deposition method has been developed to synthesise visible-light-responsive BiOBr-ZnFe(2)O(4) heterojunction photocatalysts. The heterojunctions with suitable BiOBr/ZnFe(2)O(4) ratios have a fascinating micro-spherical morphology and exhibit exceptional photocatalytic activity in visible-light degradation of Rhodamine B.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also well-known as hydrotalcite-like layered clays, have been widely investigated in the fields of catalysts and catalyst support, anion exchanger, electrical and optical functional materials, flame retardants and nanoadditives. This feature article focuses on the progress in micro-/nanostructured LDHs in terms of morphology, and also on the preparations, appli...

Cells sense and respond to properties of their microenvironment that can affect cell morphology, protein levels and localization, gene expression, and even nuclear integrity. Tissue micro-stiffness, largely influenced by extracellular matrix, varies dramatically within an organism and can be a useful parameter to both clarify and organize a wide range of cell and molecular processes, such as ge...

Diatom resting spores are a widespread, but sometimes misconstrued component of siliceous micro fossil assemblages. We illustrate and discuss resting spore morphology found in populations of Acanthoceras and Urosolenia, two widely distributed freshwater genera. Taxonomic status of these genera and the potential paleolimnologic interpretation of resting spores are discussed.

The GH4169 superalloy has the characteristics of high strength, strong thermal stability, large specific heat capacity, small conductivity, etc., but it is also a typical hard-to-cut material. When cutting this material with ordinary tools, force large, and temperature high, which leads to severe tool wear short service life. In order improve performance tools when GH4169, reduce temperature, e...
