Recently emerging two-dimensional (2D) superconductors in atomically thin layers and at heterogeneous interfaces are attracting growing interest in condensed matter physics. Here, we report that an ion-gated zirconium nitride chloride surface, exhibiting a dome-shaped phase diagram with a maximum critical temperature of 14.8 kelvin, behaves as a superconductor persisting to the 2D limit. The su...

We report a close correlation between the dynamic behavior of serrated flow and the plasticity in metallic glasses (MGs) and show that the plastic deformation of ductile MGs can evolve into a self-organized critical state characterized by the power-law distribution of shear avalanches. A stick-slip model considering the interaction of multiple shear bands is presented to reveal complex scale-fr...

We report on results of electrical resistivity and structural investigations on the cubic modification of FeGe under high pressure. The long-wavelength helical order (T(C) = 280 K) is suppressed at a critical pressure p(c) approximately 19 GPa. An anomaly at T(X)(p) and strong deviations from a Fermi-liquid behavior in a wide pressure range above p(c) suggest that the suppression of T(C) disagr...

Tensile viscous flow is explored as a forming method for metallic glasses in their supercooled liquid temperature region. Bulk amorphous preforms with nominal alloy composition Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 were produced by arc melting and tiltand suction casting into a copper mould. A simple loading rig, in which the preform is suspended from a wire, combined with selective heating of the section to be defo...

Solid atomic hydrogen is one of the simplest systems to undergo a metal-insulator transition. Near the transition, the electronic degrees of freedom become strongly correlated and their description provides a difficult challenge for theoretical methods. As a result, the order and density of the phase transition are still subject to debate. In this work, we use diffusion quantum Monte Carlo to b...

Spin wave measurements have been carried out in ferromagnetic (F) La(1-x)(Sr,Ca)(x)MnO(3) with x(Sr) = 0.15, 0.175, 0.2, 0.3, and x(Ca) = 0.3. In all q directions, close to the zone boundary, the spin wave spectra consist of several energy levels, with the same values in the metallic and the x approximately 1/8 doping ranges. For x(Sr) = 0.15, the data are quantitatively interpreted in terms of...

XPS depth profiles were used to investigate the effects of rapid thermal annealing under varying conditions on the structural, magnetic and optical properties of Ni-doped ZnO thin films. Oxidization of metallic Ni from its metallic state to two-valence oxidation state occurred in the film annealed in air at 600 C, while reduction of Ni2þ from its two-valence oxidation state to metallic state oc...

The Bose Metal: gauge field fluctuations and scaling for field tuned quantum phase transitions Abstract In this paper, we extend our previous discussion of the Bose metal to the field tuned case. We point out that the recent observation of the metallic state as an intermediate phase between the superconductor and the insulator in the field tuned experiments on MoGe films is in perfect consisten...

We present a comprehensive theoretical study of the electronic properties and relative stabilities of edge-oxidized zigzag graphene nanoribbons. The oxidation schemes considered include hydroxyl, lactone, ketone, and ether groups. Using screened exchange density functional theory, we show that these oxidized ribbons are more stable than hydrogen-terminated nanoribbons except for the case of the...

We report the results of transport measurements on SrRuO3, Sr3Ru2O7, and CaRuO3. In SrRuO3 and Sr3Ru2O7, our findings are consistent with the predictions of Fermi liquid theory, in contrast to previous reports based on samples with much shorter mean free paths. In CaRuO3, however, a T1.5 power law is seen in the resistivity in the high purity samples studied here. Our work gives concrete eviden...
