4,6-Dichloro-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine (3) reacts with EtONa in EtOH, at ca. 20 ◦C, for 2 h, to give exclusively 4-chloro-6-ethoxy-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine (5) in 89% yield. The latter is presented as a useful multifunctionalised pyrimidine scaffold.

Novel mesoporous poly(vinyl alcohol)/SiO(2) composite nanofiber membranes functionalized with mercapto groups with diameters of 300-500 nm have been fabricated by a sol-gel electrospinning process; they were highly effective at absorbing Cu(ii) ions from waste water. These nanofiber membranes could be regenerated through acidification.

A series of 3-substituted-4-(5-nitro-2-furfurylidene)amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazoles 3 and their Mannich bases have been synthesized. The structures of these Schiff bases and Mannich bases were confirmed on the basis of elemental analysis, H NMR and mass spectral data. The above compounds were also screened for their antifungal activity against C.albicans.

A novel cysteine-incorporated anthraquinone derivative was synthesized, and its molecular structure was determined by X-ray crystal analysis.
