Three theories of analogy have been proposed which are supported by computational models and data from experiments on human analogical abilities. In this paper, we show how these theories can be unified within a common metatheoretical framework which distinguishes between levels of informational, behavioural and hardware constraints. This framework makes clear the distinctions between three com...

This paper outlines an eighteen-month project undertaken by the MirandaNet Fellowship from 2006 – 7 to explore the ways in which multimodal concept mapping and ICT could enhance teaching and learning. Visual thinking and learning tools such as Mind Mapping and Concept Mapping have long been used in classrooms. They support (and in many cases underpin) visual learning. Findings from all of the p...

To manage the complicated data such as recursive elements, multiply namespaces, repeatable structures, extended elements and attributes in the XML Binding documents of distance education technology specifications, and solve the existing P_Schema (Physical XML Schema) cannot map for above complicated data, this paper proposes a new mapping model namely C_Schema (Complex XML Schema) which inherit...

We compute the growth series and the growth functions of reducible and pseudo–Anosov elements of the pure mapping class group of the sphere with four holes with respect to a certain generating set. We prove that the ratio of the number of pseudo–Anosov elements to that of all elements in a ball with center at the identity tends to one as the radius of the ball tends to infinity.

We present a technique to extend any Jacobian based quality measure for linear elements to high-order isoparametric planar triangles of any interpolation degree. The extended quality measure is obtained as the inverse of the distortion of the high-order element with respect to an ideal element. To measure the highorder distortion, we integrate on the curved element the inverse of the Jacobian b...

Application of natural language understanding to requirements gathering remains a field that has only limited explorations so far. This paper presents an approach to extract the object oriented elements of the required system. This approach starts with assigning the parts of speech tags to each word in the given input document. Further, to resolve the ambiguity posed by the pronouns, the pronou...

This paper introduces a design for the taxonomical representation of participants’ instantial meaningmaking, as the basis for providing a measure of ambiguity and contestation. We use hyponymy and meronymy as the basis for our taxonomies and adopt the System Network formalism as the basis for their representation. We achieve an integration of transcript and taxonomy using an XML based ‘satellit...
