With the development of nanotechnology and the wide use of iron oxide nanoparticles, it has become necessary to assess the potential adverse biological effects of magnetite. This study investigated the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and oxidative damage of different concentrations of magnetite (0 to 1000 mg/L) in human whole blood cultures. After supplementation of magnetite, the blood samples were...
We report experimental and simulation studies on ion specificity in aqueous colloidal suspensions of positively charged, bare magnetite nanoparticles. Magnetite has the largest saturation magnetization among iron oxides and relatively low toxicity, which explain why it has been used in multiple biomedical applications. Bare magnetite is hydrophilic and the sign of the surface charge can be chan...
In this work, a new hybrid organometallic-inorganic hybrid nanomaterial was prepared by immobilization of acetyl ferrocene on the surface of magnetite nanoparticles. Covalent grafting of silica coated magnetite nanoparticles (SCMNPs) with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane gave aminopropyl-modified magnetite nanoparticles (AmpSCMNPs). Then, Schiff base condensation of AmpSCMNPs with acet...
a new hybrid nanomaterial was developed by immobilization of phosphomolybdate anions on the surface of modified magnetite nanoparticles with quaternary phosphonium cations. silica coated magnetic nanoparticles supported phosphonium cations, ph3p+-scmnps, were prepared by covalent attachment of chloropropylsilyl groups on the surface of silica coated magnetite nanoparticles and next reaction wit...
In this report, magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized via coprecipitation of Fe2+ and Fe3+ with ammonium hydroxide, and the surface of synthesized nanoparticles was organically functionalized by commercially available amine coupling agent namely, 3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (APTS) by using well-known sol–gel method. Further reaction of the synthesized Fe3O4@APTS core-shell magne...
We report that Fe3O4 nanoparticles are able to catalyse lipid peroxidation in liposomes at acidic but not neutral pH. The oxidation is dependent on either pre-existing lipid peroxides or hydrogen peroxide as a substrate. This is the first evidence for metal oxide nanoparticles as peroxidase mimetics oxidising biomolecules in a relevant environment.
In this contribution we report a synthetic strategy for the encapsulation of functional biomolecules within MOF-based microcapsules. We employ an agarose hydrogel droplet Pickering-stabilised by UiO-66 and magnetite nanoparticles as a template around which to deposit a hierarchically structured ZIF-8 shell. The resulting microcapsules are robust, highly microporous and readily attracted to a ma...
A new development in small-angle neutron scattering with polarization analysis allows us to directly extract the average spatial distributions of magnetic moments and their correlations with three-dimensional directional sensitivity in any magnetic field. Applied to a collection of spherical magnetite nanoparticles 9.0 nm in diameter, this enhanced method reveals uniformly canted, magnetically ...
[1] Previous workers identified a magnetically anomalous clay layer deposited on the northern United States Atlantic Coastal Plain during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM). The finding inspired the highly controversial hypothesis that a cometary impact triggered the PETM. Here we present ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), isothermal and anhysteretic remanent magnetization, first-order rev...
A new class of monodisperse water-soluble magnetite nanoparticles was prepared by a simple and inexpensive method based on a polyol process, and their potential as MRI contrast agents was investigated.
