BACKGROUND Histology is the unique method for diagnosis of silent liver diseases; so, we aimed to determine the prevalence of fatty liver and other silent liver diseases among those who passed away for causes other than liver diseases in Tehran. METHODS Over a two-year period (2002 - 2004) we enrolled autopsies performed at the Forensic Medicine Center in Tehran. Demographic information, hist...
A biopsy gun which can be operated by one hand has been evaluated at post-mortem to determine its accuracy in biopsying impalpable lesions within the liver under intraoperative ultrasound control. Of 20 impalpable metastases identified positive histology was obtained in 90% demonstrating that this technique is of value in identifying and localising metastases in the liver.
Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterised by cholestatic liver function tests, antimitochondrial antibodies, and abnormal liver histology. Early descriptions of a rare rapidly progressive disease no longer reflect the more indolent progress often seen today. Many patients have significant long term morbidity through symptoms such as fatigue and itch with a mi...

BACKGROUND Reduced serum levels of adiponectin have been associated with insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the relationship between serum adiponectin levels and hepatic histology in NAFLD is controversial. The aim of this study was to explore associations between plasma adiponectin concentrations and liver histology in morbidly obese patients. METHODS ...
NASH is a frequent liver disease that develops in close association with IR and may progress to cirrhosis. Exclusion of excessive alcohol consumption as well as of other liver diseases and liver histology are required for diagnosis. Progress in the understanding of the pathophysiology of NASH allows interesting therapeutic considerations. It is logical to treat the associated metabolic conditio...

We report the first Italian case of glatiramer acetate-related acute hepatotoxicity. A 25-years-old woman suffering from multiple sclerosis presented acute hepatitis after eight months of treatment. Neither infective, nor autoimmune markers were detected. Liver biopsy histology was consistent with drug-induced acute injury. Liver function tests became normal after eight weeks of treatment disco...
The visceral adiposity index (VAI) is a marker of visceral fat distribution and dysfunction. Visceral adiposity is related to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); however, there is some controversy regarding the association between VAI and NAFLD.The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between VAI and NAFLD and to describe the related factors in severely obese patients. A tota...
