OBJECTIVE To determine liver fat content in patients with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)-associated lipodystrophy. BACKGROUND Lipodystrophy in several animal models is associated with fat accumulation in insulin-sensitive tissues, such as the liver. This causes hyperinsulinaemia, dyslipidaemia and other features of insulin resistance. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS...

The occurrence of lipodystrophy in patients taking anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) medications is a serious problem as it is irreversible even after drug withdrawal. Although it was first recognized in patients taking proteinase inhibitors, other types of anti-HIV agents can also cause lipodystrophy. In a recent publication by Jones et al entitled "Highly active antiretroviral therapy d...

Familial partial lipodystrophy is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by lipoatrophy of the extremities and gluteal region and lipohypertrophy of the face, neck and/or trunk. It is associated with insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia and increased risk of recurrent episodes of pancreatitis. The PPARG mutation forms, called familial partial lipodystrophies type 3, are very r...

The lipodystrophy syndrome (adipose tissue redistribution and metabolic abnormalities) observed with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) during human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection may be related to increased proinflammatory cytokine activity. We measured acute cytokine (TNF-alpha, IL-6, leptin), glycerol, and lactate secretion from abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), ...

Lipodystrophy is a disorder characterized by a loss of adipose tissue often accompanied by severe hypertriglyceridemia, insulin resistance, diabetes, and fatty liver. It can be inherited or acquired. The most severe inherited form is Berardinelli-Seip Congenital Lipodystrophy Type 2, associated with mutations in the BSCL2 gene. BSCL2 encodes seipin, the function of which has been entirely unkno...

INTRODUCTION Stavudine is still widely used in under-resourced settings such as Malawi due to its low price. It frequently causes peripheral neuropathy and lipodystrophy and increases the risk of lactic acidosis and other high lactate syndromes. METHODS We studied the association of longitudinal lactate levels, obtained by routine, 3-monthly point-of-care monitoring, with peripheral neuropath...

INTRODUCTION Lipodystrophy is a frequent and disfiguring adverse effect of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in patients with HIV. It affects the quality of life of the patient and adherence to treatment, and generates new needs for comprehensive healthcare services. The aim of this study will be to conduct a systematic review of the literature from observational studies and describe lipodystrophy a...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate differences in glucose uptake by skeletal muscle tissue and subcutaneous fat in HIV patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) presenting with and without lipodystrophy as well as in drug-naive HIV patients using F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography. PATIENTS AND METHODS Thirty-nine consecutive patients suffering from HIV: seven drug-naiv...

Background: With increasing prevalence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and improved prognosis of patients due to chronic use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), multiple adverse effects have been also reported, especially lipodystrophy. This study was done to check the effectiveness of fat assisted body sculpturing for lipodystrophy in HIV positive patients. Methods: ...

Mesenteric lipodystrophy is a rare disorder characterized by either focal or diffuse thickening of the mesentery due to chronic inflammation and fibrosis. The etiology and pathogenesis is obscure. Roentgenologic findings help in differential diagnosis with other diseases but they rarely establish the diagnosis. This is made in most cases by laparotomy.
