User support which takes into account the user's current context is a key issue of ambient intelligence applications. In this contribution we address the question of how a user may configure and keep control of situated user support. Background of our work is a system, which creates an augmented, personal memory from events perceived in an instrumented environment. We show how the user may –ass...
Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is an information technology approach that is interactive, sensitive and responsive to a user’s environment. Emerging AmI technologies are intended to be intelligent and intuitive to a user’s needs and therefore embedded into a user’s everyday life without so much as being obtrusive. However, with any emergent technology such as AmI, ethical concerns arise. It would b...
This paper presents an architecture to help the decisionmaking process of disaster managers. Here we focus on a core aspect of this process which is taking decisions in the presence of conflicting options. We exemplify this problem with three simple scenarios related to diverse contexts and provide an explanation on how our system will advice in all these cases.
We give a systematic construction of epimorphisms between 2–bridge link groups. Moreover, we show that 2–bridge links having such an epimorphism between their link groups are related by a map between the ambient spaces which only have a certain specific kind of singularity. We show applications of these epimorphisms to the character varieties for 2–bridge links and π1 –dominating maps among 3–m...
Lexical tone perception was investigated in elderly Thais with Normal Hearing (NH), or Hearing Impairment (HI), the latter with and without Hearing Aids. Auditory-visual (AV), auditory-only (AO), and visual-only (VO) discrimination of Thai tones was investigated. Both groups performed poorly in VO. In AV and AO, the NH performed better than the HI group, and Hearing Aids facilitated tone discri...
In ambient intelligence systems, it is necessary to represent and reason about dynamic spatial scenes and configurations. Primarily, the ability to perform predictive and explanatory analyses on the basis of available sensory data is crucial toward serving a useful intelligent function within such environments. In this paper, we present a qualitative model for representing the relevant aspects ...
We introduce an active imaging method to measure scene illumination. The system implementation is divided into four steps. First, the system acquires two images: one is an ordinary image of the scene under ambient light and the other is a corresponding image in which light from the camera flash is added to the scene. Second, the image pair is analyzed to obtain an image that represents the scen...
We examine an approach in technology-enhanced learning that avoids deviation from existing pedagogical practices as these are often reluctant to change. This is accomplished by designing technology to augment learning activities that are already in common practice. We implemented two ambient awareness tools, Lantern and Reflect, in line with this approach. The former is tailored for recitation ...
In order for personal assistant agents in an ambient intelligence context to provide good recommendations, or pro-actively support humans in task allocation, a good model of what the human prefers is essential. One aspect that can be considered to tailor this support to the preferences of humans is trust. This measurement of trust should incorporate the notion of relativeness since a personal a...
