The cbsA gene encoding the collagen-binding S-layer protein of Lactobacillus crispatus JCM5810 was expressed in L. casei ATCC 393(T). The S-protein was not retained on the surface of the recombinant bacteria but was secreted into the medium. By translational fusion of CbsA to the cell wall sorting signal of the proteinase, PrtP, of L. casei, CbsA was presented at the surface, rendering the tran...

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are Gram positive nonpathogenic commensal organisms present in human gastrointestinal tract. In vivo, LAB are separated from antigen-presenting cells such as dendritic cells (DC) by the intestinal epithelial barrier. In this study, the impact of one LAB strain (Lactobacillus casei ATCC393) on human monocyte-derived DC from allergic and healthy donors was assessed by u...

Measurement of the serum Lactobacillus casei (;folic-acid') activity is widely used as an index of folic-acid deficiency. Present methods of assay result in recovery of about half the active material in normal serum. A modified method of assay is described which gives higher L. casei values and a clearer distinction between the sera of normal subjects and of patients with folic-acid deficiency.

The transmissible plasmid pAMbeta1, which codes for erythromycin and lincomycin resistance, was conjugally transferred from a Lancefield group F Streptococcus to a strain of Streptococcus avium. Both organisms served as pAMbeta1 donors for three strains of Lactobacillus casei. Introduction of pAMbeta1 into one of the L. casei strains caused the organism to lose its native 6.7 X 10(6)-dalton pla...

Since new analogues of riboflavin have been synthesized which inhibit the growth of rats and of microorganisms which require riboflavin (l-3), it was decided to test the effect of some of these compounds upon the utilization of riboflavin and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) for growth of Lactobacillus casei. Other compounds structurally related to riboflavin were also studied. It has been sho...

AIMS To see the possibility of particle size distribution analyser (PSDA) in detecting concentration of lactobacillus contaminants in yeast fermentation. METHODS AND RESULTS A PSDA was used to rapidly determine the size and concentration of lactobacillus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Data showed that the aerodynamic diameters of Lactobacillus casei and S. cerevisiae cells were around 0.63 and...

A study of the proteinase activity of Lactobacillus casei grown in milk and of cell-free extract of L. cawi has been reported on in a previous paper (Brandsaeter and Nelson, 1956). Whereas the proteinases of L. casei have been studied to some extent earlier, very little has been done to characterize the peptidases of this organism. Other lactobacilli hydrolyze some peptides (Christophersen and ...
