subtheme: The future of cities in the knowledge age 1. Introduction A lot has been talked about the knowledge society and the impact of knowledge on the structure of a society 's economy. But a society is always located somehow – it does not exist in a vacuum. Are there specific places for the knowledge society? And what effects these places have on the economic and social development of the so...
This article shares experience on aspects related to the methodology and modeling of a framework of City E-Governance Readiness. We discuss Europe’s progress in this domain using an “e-readiness” assessment methodology: the Integrated City E-Governance Policy Model of the IntelCities Research Project (2004-2007). Practices and trends in 12 European cities are analyzed, drawing on the results of...
Two set partitions of an n-set are said to t-intersect if they have t classes in common. A k-partition is a set partition with k classes and a k-partition is said to be uniform if every class has the same cardinality c = n/k. In this paper, we prove a higher order generalization of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for systems of pairwise t-intersecting uniform k-partitions of an n-set. We prove that f...
We prove a p-part extension of the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem and suggest several related open problems. For the basic case of two parts we describe two proofs, a combinatorial one and a spectral one.
We describe the space of E∞ spin orientations of KO and the space of E∞ string orientations of tmf.
The language of rules and models, which seems tolerable when applied to “alien” practices, ceases to convince as soon as one considers the practical mastery of the symbolism of social interaction– tact, dexterity, or savoir-faire– presupposed by the most everyday games of sociability and accompanied by the application of a spontaneous semiology, i.e. a mass of precepts, fomulae, and codified cu...
The following indicators represent useful assessment of how close we are in reaching the goal of building the knowledge society: First: Education in general and higher education in particular, its spread and quality. Only some segments of higher education, specifically some departments and some faculties with European universities have increased considerably the number of students, secured that...
A cross-intersecting Erdős-Ko-Rado set of generators of a finite classical polar space is a pair (Y,Z) of sets of generators such that all y ∈ Y and z ∈ Z intersect in at least a point. We provide upper bounds on |Y | · |Z| and classify the crossintersecting Erdős-Ko-Rado sets of maximum size with respect to |Y | · |Z| for all polar spaces except some Hermitian polar spaces.
