Unsaturated σ,π-cyclooctenyl and hydrido Ir(III) complexes bearing an unusual tridentate dianionic ONO pincer-type ligand have been straightforwardly obtained from 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid and standard Ir(I) starting materials.
