Treatment with nebulised salbutamol or a mixture of salbutamol and ipratropium was given to 138 children. Length of hospital stay and number of nebulised doses required did not differ. In severe asthma response was greater with salbutamol alone. In mild asthma response was greater with combined treatment.
OBJECTIVE The constant increase in health care costs, in a context of limited resources and the appearance of more costly though more effective drugs, justifies an assessment of the pharmacoeconomics of these drugs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of one of the newest drugs for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-tiotropium. MATERIA...
STUDY OBJECTIVE Our objective was to compare the differential effects of age and drug type on bronchodilator response. DESIGN The design was an unblinded, randomized crossover study. SETTING An ambulatory pulmonary drug study unit was the setting. PATIENTS Nineteen young (18 to 25 yr) and 17 elderly (greater than 65 yr) stable asthmatic subjects were studied. INTERVENTIONS AND MEASUREME...
PURPOSE To determine whether inhaled ipratropium bromide provides an additive, clinically important improvement in children with acute asthma who are being treated with beta 2-agonists. METHODS An English-language literature search was conducted employing MEDLINE (1966 to 1992), Science Citation Index (1986 to 1992) using key citations, bibliographic reviews of primary research and review art...
BACKGROUND Mixing of nebulized drugs is common in real life, but its consequences on aerosol output and granulometry are poorly known. METHODS In an in vitro study I evaluated the effects on aerosol output, drug output, and aerosol particle size characteristics of mixing either beclomethasone dipropionate or budesonide with albuterol and ipratropium bromide. I tested the SideStream and VentSt...
Background: A systematic review was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of tiotropium, a long acting anticholinergic drug, on clinical events, symptom scales, pulmonary function, and adverse events in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: A systematic search was made of the Cochrane trials database, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and a hand search of 20 respiratory journals. M...
