The etching of GaN was investigated in an Ar/Cl2 inductively coupled plasma. Optical emission spectroscopy and an ion flux probe were used to obtain insight into the etch mechanisms during processing. Langmuir probe measurements were also used to determine the basic Ar/Cl2 plasma characteristics. Etch rates of 500 nm/min were obtained at relatively low Cl2 fractions of 50%. The dominant emissio...

The model to simulate rescattering and partonic energy loss in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is presented. The full heavy ion event is obtained as a superposition of a soft hydro-type state and hard multi-jets. This model is capable of reproducing main features of the jet quenching pattern at RHIC, and is applied to probe jet quenching in various novel channels at LHC.

To investigate the electrical changes observed at plasma etching endpoints, experiments were performed in an inductively coupled, rf-biased reactor, during CF4/Ar plasma etches of silicon dioxide films on silicon substrates. The rf bias current, voltage, and impedance were measured vs. time during etching. Simultaneously, a Langmuir probe measured the electron and ion densities, ion current den...

A reaction-based two-photon (TP) ratiometric fluorescence probe Z2 has been developed and successfully applied to detect and image fluoride ion in living cells and tissues. The Z2 probe was designed designed to utilize an ICT mechanism between n-butylnaphthalimide as a fluorophore and tert-butyldiphenylsilane (TBDPS) as a response group. Upon addition of fluoride ion, the Si-O bond in the Z2 wo...

We present a comparison between experimental and theoretical results for pump/probe multiphoton ionizing transitions of the sodium dimer, initiated by femtosecond laser pulses. It is shown that the motion of vibrational wave packets in two electronic states is probed simultaneously and their dynamics is reflected in the total Na~ ion signal which is recorded as a function of the time delay betw...

I give several simple examples of model Langmuir probe current-voltage I-V characteristics that help students learn how to interpret real I-V characteristics obtained in a plasma. Students can also create their own Langmuir probe I-V characteristics using a program with the plasma density, plasma potential, electron temperature, ion temperature, and probe area as input parameters. Some examples...

Floating potential and ion current density measurements were taken on the laboratory model NASA-173Mv2 in order to improve understanding of the physical processes affecting Hall thruster performance at high specific impulse. Floating potential was measured on discharge chamber centerline over axial positions spanning 10 mm from the anode to 100 mm downstream of the exit plane. Ion current densi...

A family of terbium probes was synthesized and evaluated for the luminescence detection of copper and zinc in water at neutral pH. Each probe incorporates a terbium ion chelated by a macrocyclic polyaminocarboxylate and conjugated to either one, two, or three phenanthridine antennas via a diamine linker. All three probes, Tb-1Phen, Tb-2Phen, and Tb-3Phen, exhibit similar responses toward copper...

A versatile double Langmuir probe technique has been developed by incorporating analytical fits to Laframboise's numerical results for ion current collection by biased electrodes of various sizes relative to the local electron Debye length. Application of these fits to the double probe circuit has produced a set of coupled equations that express the potential of each electrode relative to the p...
