Nanowire growth in the standard <111> direction is assumed to occur at a planar catalyst-nanowire interface, but recent reports contradict this picture. Here we show that a nonplanar growth interface is, in fact, a general phenomenon. Both III-V and group IV nanowires show a distinct region at the trijunction with a different orientation whose size oscillates during growth, synchronized with st...

The phenomenon of Inverse Linking has proven challenging for theories of the syntax-semantics interface; a noun phrase within another behaves with respect to binding as though it were structurally independent. In this paper I show that, even within an LF-movement style approach to the syntax-semantics interface, we can derive all and only the appropriate meanings for such constructions using no...

In this report we show that synchrotron X-ray radiography is a powerful method to study liquid-air interface penetration through opaque microtextured surface roughness, leading to wetting transition. We investigate this wetting phenomenon in the context of sessile drop evaporation, and establish that liquid interface sinking into the surface texture is indeed dictated by the balance of capillar...

Exchange bias (EB) is usually observed in systems with an interface between different magnetic phases after field cooling. Here we report an unusual phenomenon in which a large EB can be observed in Ni-Mn-In bulk alloys after zero-field cooling from an unmagnetized state. We propose that this is related to the newly formed interface between different magnetic phases during the initial magnetiza...

A possible mechanism of the macroturbulence instability observed in fluxline systems during remagnetization of superconductors is proposed. It is shown that when a region with flux is invaded by antiflux the interface can become unstable if there is a relative tangential flux motion. This condition occurs at the interface owing to the anisotropy of the viscous motion of vortices. The phenomenon...

In this work we propose an efficient finite volume approximation of twofluid flows. Our scheme is based on three ingredients. We first construct a conservative scheme that removes the pressure oscillations phenomenon at the interface. The construction relies on a random sampling at the interface [6, 5]. Secondly, we replace the exact Riemann solver by a faster relaxation Riemann solver with goo...

Idea In Brief In real industrial and instrumentation (I&I) applications, RS-485 interface links must work in harsh electromagnetic environments. Large transient voltages caused by lightning strikes, electrostatic discharge, and other electromagnetic phenomenon can damage communications ports. To ensure that these data ports can survive in their final installation environments, they must meet ce...

Molecular dynamics simulations of porphyrazine monolayers at the air–water interface have been carried out. All possible molecular orientations found by analysis of the π-A isotherms are reproduced by computer simulations. The existence of “guest-water” molecules has been observed in the simulation; this confirms the assumptions of experimentalists concerning this phenomenon.

Solutions of a 1-D free-interface problem modeling solid combustion front propagating in combustible mixture with periodically varying concentration of reactant exhibit classical phenomenon of mode locking. Numerical simulation shows a variety of locked periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic solutions. PACS: 05.45.-a, 02.30.Oz, 81.20.Ka

In this article, I will present partial results of three experiments that deal with the second language (L2) acquisition of the same phenomenon: Clitic Left Dislocation (CLLD) in Spanish and Bulgarian by native English speakers. This is the phenomenon where an object that is previously mentioned in the discourse (a Topic) moves to the beginning of the sentence, and is doubled by a clitic agreei...
