This paper reports an evolutionary approach called Scatter Search, that uses the concept of Pareto optimality to obtain a good approximate Pareto frontier. In order to designate a subset of strategies to be a reference solutions a choice function called Kramer Selection is used. A variant of measure of Kemen-Snell may be used, in our case study, in order to find a diverse set to complement the ...

We prove the absence of non-scattering energies for potentials in the plane having a corner of angle smaller than π. This extends the earlier result of Bl̊asten, Päivärinta and Sylvester who considered rectangular corners. In three dimensions, we prove a similar result for any potential with a circular conic corner whose opening angle is outside a countable subset of (0, π).

Scatter search (SS) is an evolutionary approach for optimization. It has been applied to problems with continuous and discrete variables and with a single or multiple objectives. The success of scatter search as an optimization technique is well documented in a constantly growing number of journal articles and book chapters. This chapter first focuses on the basic scatter search framework, whic...

Computer-assisted interactive visualization has become a valuable tool for discovering the underlying meaning of tabular data, including categorical tabular data. The capabilities of the more traditionally mundane kinds of pictures like scatter plots can be expanded to usefully depict categorical tabular data by incorporating annotations and transforms, and by integrating the extensions into an...

The scatter plot is a well-known method of visualizing pairs of two continuous variables. Scatter plots are intuitive and easy-to-use, but often have a high degree of overlap which may occlude a significant portion of the data. To analyze a dense non-uniform dataset, a recursive drill-down is required for detailed analysis. In this paper, we propose variable binned scatter plots to allow the vi...

PURPOSE The proliferation of cone-beam CT (CBCT) has created interest in performance optimization, with x-ray scatter identified among the main limitations to image quality. CBCT often contends with elevated scatter, but the wide variety of imaging geometry in different CBCT configurations suggests that not all configurations are affected to the same extent. Graphics processing unit (GPU) accel...

Introduction: Myocardial perfusion imaging is a nuclear medicine imaging method that is used to detect coronary artery diseases. One of the main sources of error in this imaging method is the detection of Compton scattered photons in the photopeak energy window used for data acquisition. This results in the degradation of the image contrast, and therefore decreases the...

We provide a tutorial survey of connections between genetic algorithms and scatter search that have useful implications for developing new methods for optimization problems. The links between these approaches are rooted in principles underlying mathematical relaxations, which became inherited and extended by scatter search. Hybrid methods incorporating elements of genetic algorithms and scatter...

Within the professional literature, it is frequently suggested that interpretation of cognitive profile scatter may be useful for clinical and/or diagnostic decision-making. To wit, Hale and colleagues (2008) posit that cognitive scatter is a defining characteristic of learning disabilities and that individuals with learning disabilities may have higher levels of scatter than normal controls. T...
