To date, membranes which could be used to separate gas mixtures at high temperatures (notably combustion or other process gas streams at temperatures T > 750K) have only been developed with limited success and it is apparent that this modest pace of growth is, in part, due to a lack of a detailed understanding of the membrane fabrication process at an atomistic level. One particular family of m...

A new synthetic scheme towards silica-supported organotrichlorotin derivatives has been developed. It involves the synthesis of (11-triethoxysilyl)undecyltricyclohexyltin, followed by sol-gel processing and, subsequently in the formation of the resulting hybrid silica, by electrophilic substitution of the tricyclohexyltin function by the target grafted trichlorotin using tin tetrachloride. HR-M...

We report a preparation method for the synthesis of monodisperse magnetic polymer/silica hybrid microspheres using polymer microspheres incorporated with magnetic nanoparticles as a novel template. Monodisperse, hierarchically mesoporous, silica microspheres embedded with magnetic nanoparticles were successfully fabricated after the calcination of the hybrid microspheres. The magnetic nanoparti...

The effectiveness of PCR inhibitor removal by silica membranes in combination with the Amplicor Mycobacterium tuberculosis kit was analyzed for 655 respiratory and nonrespiratory specimens. The overall inhibition rate was reduced from 12.5%, when applying the Amplicor kit alone, to 1.1% with the addition of silica membrane DNA purification.

Membranes have been used for gas separation for quite some time but have seen major growth during the 90’s [1]. For many industrial applications involving gas streams, it is important that membranes resist high temperatures and corrosive environments. As in Table 1, organic membranes are not heat resistant at high temperatures while zeolite membranes have pore sizes too large to separate gases ...

Hyperbranched polyimide–silica hybrids (HBPI–silica HBDs) and hyperbranched polyimide–silica composites (HBPI–silica CPTs) were prepared, and their general and gas transport properties were investigated to clarify the effect of silica sources and preparation methods. HBPI–silica HBDs and HBPI–silica CPTs were synthesized by two-step polymerization of A2 + B3 monomer system via polyamic acid as ...

In previous chapters, the synthesis of a highly hydrogen selective membrane formed by the deposition of a silica layer on top of a Vycor glass substrate was discussed. In this chapter, the preparation of a composite membrane using a porous alumina support is described. This membrane showed a high hydrogen permeance of the order of 10 mol m s Pa at 873 K with selectivity of hydrogen over CH4, CO...

A simple single-step thermal-treatment "one-pot" approach for the preparation of organic-silica hybrid capillary monolithic columns is described. In this improved method, the cross-linker vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) was replaced by 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MAPS), which is more active in polymerization reactions, and only one thermal treatment step was required in the preparation...

BACKGROUND The design of new technologies for treatment of human disorders such as protein deficiencies is a complex and difficult task. Particularly, the construction of artificial organs, based on the immunoisolation of protein-secreting cells, requires the use of suitable materials which have to be biocompatible with the immunoisolated cells and avoid any inappropriate host response. METHO...

"Alginate/silica hybrid materials for immobilization of green microalgae Chlorella vulgaris for cellbased sensor arrays" (2014). Thin layers and patterned dot arrays of sodium alginate containing living microalgal cells were deposited onto glass carriers which were subsequently gelled using amino-functionalized silica sol to obtain reinforced alginate hydrogels. The resulting alginate/silica hy...
