BACKGROUND Fractures of the humeral shaft are associated with a profound temporary (and in the elderly sometimes even permanent) impairment of independence and quality of life. These fractures can be treated operatively or non-operatively, but the optimal tailored treatment is an unresolved problem. As no high-quality comparative randomized or observational studies are available, a recent Cochr...

BACKGROUND Radial nerve palsy associated with fractures of the shaft of the humerus is the most common nerve lesion complicating fractures of long bones. However, the management of radial nerve injuries associated with humeral fractures is debatable. There was no consensus between observation and early exploration. METHODS AND FINDINGS The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controll...

Arm wrestling is a popular activity enjoyed by men and women of all ages. Although uncommon, several cases of arm wrestling injuries have been reported in the medical literature. Fractures of the humerus sustained during arm wrestling are rare clinical entities that can be confused with pathologic fractures. A butterfly fragment subtype of comminuted humeral fracture is an even more exceptional...

Metastases to bone are the most frequent cause of destructive lesions to the skeleton in adults . The tumours that are most likely to metastasize to bone are prostate (32%), breast (22%), kidney (16%), lung and thyroid. The typical distribution of metastatic lesions are to the spine, ribs, pelvis, and proximal limb girdles. The humerus is the second most common site for long bone metastases, be...

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to determine if there were significant differences in glenohumeral joint morphology between North American and East Asian populations that may influence sizing and selection of shoulder arthroplasty systems. METHODS Computed tomography reconstructions of 92 North American and 58 East Asian patients were used to perform 3-dimensional measurements. The proxi...

PURPOSE To assess outcomes of minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) using a locking compression plate (LCP) for 42 humeral shaft fractures. METHODS. 28 men and 14 women aged 18 to 68 (mean, 34; median, 29) years underwent closed reduction and MIPO using a LCP for type 12-A (n=26) and type 12-B (n=16) humeral shaft fractures. Eight of the patients were aged ≥ 50 years. Patients were fol...

Successful total shoulder arthroplasty is, in part, dependent on anatomic reconstruction of the glenohumeral joint. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the post-operative anatomy of total shoulder arthroplasty with an anatomic implant design in patients with primary glenohumeral osteoarthritis and compare it to published normative anatomic measurements. Fifty-one patients (56 shoulders) w...

We report a unique case of juxtacortical osteoblastoma of the humeral shaft, which stimulated the appearance of an extraosseous extension of Gaucher-cell deposits. The tumour was treated successfully by curettage and bone grafting. We can find no previous report of this association between osteoblastoma and Gaucher's disease.

Posterior shoulder dislocations are rare and represent 2-5% of all traumatic shoulder dislocation. A combination of this injury with ipsilateral humeral shaft fracture is extremely rare event. We here report a case of posterior shoulder dislocation with ipsilateral fracture shaft of humerus following road traffic accident. Through this report, we highlight the rarity of the condition and review...
