Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy results in neutrophil recruitment and subsequent secretion of cytokines to eliminate non-muscle invasive bladder cancer cells. However, bladder cancer cells often resist BCG immunotherapy. Thus, understanding the mechanism of action of BCG, and designing appropriate combination therapies might help to overcome BCG resistance and redirect...
We have found that children with complete interferon gamma (IFNgamma) receptor deficiency, unlike patients with other genetic defects predisposing them to mycobacterial diseases, have very high levels of IFNgamma in their plasma. This unexpected observation provides a simple and accurate diagnostic method for complete IFNgamma receptor deficiency in children with clinical disease caused by baci...
This study investigates the effect of aluminum nanoparticles (AL NPs) on vaccines (e.g., poliomyelitis and bacille Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccines). Cyclic voltammetry was used to determine extent its blood composition using an in vivo samples obtained from rabbits injected with poliomyelitic virus BCG across a period four weeks. The oxidation current peaks in rabbit were enhanced increas...
Intravesical instillation of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) has been shown to be an effective form of immunotherapy for bladder cancer. This case report describes a patient who develops systemic BCG-osis following intravesical BCG instillation and demonstrates the importance of being aware of more severe complications associated with BCG immunotherapy.
BCG therapy is used as a treatment in bladder cancer. Intravesical administration of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin is used as a treatment method in superficial bladder cancer. While it is commonly effective, some serious side effects may occur. We hereby report a 65-year-old man who developed granulomatous hepatitis as a complication following BCG therapy. He was treated successfully with antituberc...
– Met criteria for one of the following NMIBC treatment groups: • Group 1: Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG)-naïve, treated with transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) ± intravesical chemotherapy • Group 2: Had current or previous BCG treatment but were refractory or resistant to treatment • Group 3: Were BCG refractory or relapsing and next treatment option would be cystectomy (but were...
Intravesical bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG) instillation has been used as immunotherapy for early stage bladder cancer for >40 years. Complications from this therapy are rare but may result in a spectrum of infectious sequelae. Here we describe the case of an elderly man who presented with a pleural effusion and subcutaneous nodule several years after treatment with BCG.
Published reports appear to underestimate the true rate of adverse reactions to bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine. At a recent national conference on tuberculosis control among aboriginal populations, lack of awareness of what constitutes an adverse reaction was considered a possible contributing factor to underreporting. The following review defines a normal BCG response and discusses the ...
A real-time PCR protocol for detecting Mycobacterium bovis in feces was evaluated in bovine tuberculosis-infected African buffalo (Syncerus caffer). Fecal samples spiked with 1.42 × 10(3) cells of M. bovis culture/g and Bacille Calmette-Guérin standards with 1.58 × 10(1) genome copies/well were positive by real-time PCR but all field samples were negative.
