A new method for the preparation of graphene has been developed via porphyrin exfoliation of graphite in NMP. The exfoliation, which follows the intercalation of organic ammonium ions, is based on the pi-pi interaction between graphene and porphyrins. The graphene sheets prepared by this method show undisturbed sp(2) carbon networks.

Graphene is a 2D material with atomic thickness and possesses unusual thermal, electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. However, those predicted, or measured, material properties could be achieved only when graphene has low defects with controlled surrounding environments. In this presentation, I will introduce two major strategies of graphene synthesis from my group; nonoxidized graphen...

A novel approach for bulk synthesis of lithium-intercalated graphene sheets through the reduction of exfoliated graphene oxide in liquid ammonia and lithium metal is reported. It is demonstrated here that as-synthesized lithiated graphite oxide sheets (Li-RGO) can be directly used as an electrode material in lithium batteries. The electrochemical studies on Li-RGO electrodes show a significant ...

We synthesized the novel nanocomposite consisting of alternately stacked single graphene sheets and a C60 monolayer by using the graphite intercalation technique in which alkylamine molecules help intercalate large C60 molecules into the graphite. It is found that the intercalated C60 molecules can rotate in between single graphene sheets by using 13C NMR measurements. The grease with the nanoc...

Using ab initio Density Functional Theory, we determine changes of the equilibrium structure of graphite due to charge transfer between the alkali intercalant atoms and the host layers. From our self-consistent calculations, we show for stage-l Li and K graphite intercalation compounds that there is a deviation from a universal relationship between charge transfer and the C-C bond length. We fi...
