Synthetic polymers and dendrimers have been widely used by the medical community to overcome biological barriers and enhance in vivo biomedical applications. Despite the widespread use of biomaterials it has been generally extremely difficult to monitor noninvasively their fate in vivo. Here we report multilayered nanoprobes, consisting of a near-infrared core, nanoencapsulated in a biodegradab...

OBJECTIVES The mammalian mixed function oxidase (MFO) system participates in hydroxylation of many hydrophobic endogenous compounds as well as xenobiotics such as drugs and carcinogens. This biotransformation system, located in a membrane of endoplasmic reticulum, consists of cytochrome P-450 (P450), NADPH:P450 oxidoreductase and a facultative component, cytochrome b5. The knowledge of the inte...

SERS biosensor for sensitive and selective detection of lead ions (Pb(2+)) based on DNAzyme was developed by taking advantage of the specific catalytic reaction of DNAzyme upon binding to Pb(2+) ions. Detection was accomplished by SERS nanoprobe labeled with DNA and Raman reporters for signal amplification.

A photoacoustic nanoprobe is self-assembled from human serum albumin and two types of dye molecules, one is inert to pH and the other is pH sensitive. This probe and the quantitative ratiometric photoacoustic pH imaging method are shown to have high safety, be easy-to-operate, and have depth-independent accuracy for real-time in vivo pH imaging of entire tumors. These features make them promisi...

This study used a hydrothermal approach to create sensitive and focused nanoprobe. Using an “on-off-on” sensing mechanism, the nanoprobe was employed detect quantify ferric ions L-ascorbic acid. Synthesis of carbon quantum dots achieved with single step at 180°C for 24 hours using hot pepper as starting material. The prepared CQDs showed high fluorescence yield 30% when excited 350 nm, exhibiti...

A magnetic quantum dot (MQD) based cellular nanoprobe, composed of a magnetic oxide nanoparticle component and a quantum dot component, has been synthesized and used for both imaging and separation. The successful synthesis is based on a reverse micelle based polyacrylate coating in the presence of component nanoparticles, followed by their functionalization via conjugation chemistry.

A multimodal optical/paramagnetic nanoprobe, Den-Angio, was developed and demonstrated a capability to circumvent the blood brain barrier (BBB) and visualize brain tumors with high sensitivity in vivo. Den-Angio holds promise to pre-operatively localize brain tumors and make image-guided tumor resection possible during surgery.

A ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe based on terbium functionalized carbon dots (CDs) was designed to detect dipicolinic acid (DPA) as an anthrax biomarker with high selectivity and sensitivity. CDs were generated by one-step synthesis using an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid precursor, and served as a scaffold for coordination with Tb(3+) and a fluorescence reference.

Abstract Efficient frequency up-conversion of coherent light at the nanoscale is highly demanded for a variety modern photonic applications, but it remains challenging in nanophotonics. Surface second-order nonlinearity noble metals can be significantly boosted up by plasmon-induced field enhancement, however related far-field second-harmonic generation (SHG) may also quenched symmetric plasmon...
