UNLABELLED Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne Gram-positive bacterial pathogen, and many of its virulence factors are either secreted proteins or proteins covalently or noncovalently attached to the cell wall. Previous work has indicated that noncovalently attached proteins with GW (glycine-tryptophan) domains are retained in the cell wall by binding to the cell wall polymer lipoteichoic aci...

Resistance to apoptosis is a critical feature of neoplastic cells. Galectin-1 is an endogenous carbohydrate-binding protein that induces death of leukemia and lymphoma cells, breast cancer cells, and the LNCaP prostate cancer cell line, but not other prostate cancer cell lines. To understand the mechanism of galectin-1 sensitivity of LNCaP cells compared with other prostate cancer cells, we cha...

BACKGROUND The ABO blood type B(3) is the most common B subtype in the Chinese population with a frequency of 1/900. Although IVS3+5G>A (rs55852701) mutation of B gene has been shown to associate with the development of B(3) blood type, genetic and mechanistic evaluation for the unique mixed-field agglutination phenotype has not yet been completely addressed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS In...

The cell surface membranes of mitotically active crypt cells from rat intestinal epithelium were found to have glycosyltransferase activities and endogenous acceptors not found on the differentiating villus cells. Rat intestinal epithelial cells were isolated as intact cells from different levels of the villus and crypt areas representing sequential stages of cellular differentiation. Incubatio...

BACKGROUND Subjects with non-O ABO blood group alleles have increased risk of pancreatic cancer. Glycosyltransferase activity is greater for the A(1) versus A(2) variant, whereas O01 and O02 variants are nonfunctioning. We hypothesized: 1) A(1) allele would confer greater risk than A(2) allele, 2) protective effect of the O allele would be equivalent for O01 and O02 variants, 3) secretor phenot...

BACKGROUND Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides and Z. leprieurii fruits are commonly used in traditional system of medicine for diarrhea, pain, wound healing, etc. in Cameroon, Africa. Z. leprieurii fruits have been chemically studied for its bioactive compounds whereas the investigation on Z. zanthoxyloides fruits is lacking. RESULTS After a detailed chemical analysis of the fruits of Z. leprieurii a...

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the etiologic agent of melioidosis, is responsible for a broad spectrum of illnesses in humans and animals particularly in Southeast Asia and northern Australia, where it is endemic. Burkholderia thailandensis is a nonpathogenic environmental organism closely related to B. pseudomallei. Subtractive hybridization was carried out between these two species to identify ge...

Using a MALDI-MS based assay, the kinetic parameters for peptide glucosylation using the C. difficile toxin B glycosyltransferase domain were determined. The minimum consensus sequence for glucosylation was YXXTXFXXY and the optimal peptide found was YAPTVFDAY. Using this sequence, homogenous glucosylated proteins could be readily produced.
