UNLABELLED In 95 children (age 6-18 y) treated for gallstones between 2002-2010, 95 laparoscopic cholecystectomies were carried out. Symptomatic cholecystolithiasis was the indication for laparoscopic cholecystectomy in most of the cases. In three patients, there was a conversion to open cholecystectomy. Postoperative complications due to failure of bile drainage arose in three patients. Restor...

Hepatobiliary conditions should be considered in the differential diagnosis of right pleural effusion. Here we present the illustrative images of thoracic empyema due to migrated gallstones in a woman who was treated for laparoscopic cholecystectomy one year before. The gallstones were obtained unexpectedly during a thoracentesis with aid of an Abrams needle. This rare complication is discussed...

We report a case of gallbladder and common bile duct stones occurring in a 14-year-old male who was exposed to ceftriaxone for 6 weeks. Ceftriaxone-induced gallstones are under-reported and remain an important cause of gallstones in patients exposed to this antibiotic. Gallstone development should be considered in the appropriate clinical context.

Our objective was to review the ris...

The pathogenesis of hemolysis-induced gallstones was studied in mice with a hereditary hemolytic disease called normoblastic anemia (genotype nb/nb) and in their normal controls (genotype +/+). Infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that spontaneously formed gallstones from nb/nb mice were nearly identical to stones from patients with chronic hemolysis as the result of sickle cell disease, and both...

Background Bile acid diarrhoea (BAD) is a common cause of chronic diarrhoea with a population prevalence of primary BAD around 1%. Previous studies have identified associations with low levels of the ileal hormone fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19), obesity and hypertriglyceridaemia. The aim of this study was to identify further associations of BAD. Methods A cohort of patients with chronic ...

Biliary infections are an important cause of morbidity in the Western world. With regard to epidemiology, etiology, microbiological spectrum, prevalence, location and composition of gallstones, pathogenesis, clinical sign and therapy, there are large differences between the spectrum of biliary infections in the East and in the West (Table 1). In Western countries, gallstones are found in 10 to ...
