Lipid droplets and membrane material are produced in the extracellular matrix of the arterial intima during atherogenesis. Both in vitro and in vivo experimentation suggests that fusion of modified LDL particles leads to formation of such lipid droplets. Here we applied proton NMR spectroscopy to probe surface phospholipids phosphatidylcholine (PC) and sphingomyelin (SM) of LDL particles during...

Cytokines are often used as adjuvants to increase the immunogenicity of vaccines because they can improve the immune response and/or direct it into a desired direction. As an alternative to codelivering Ags and cytokines separately, they can be fused into a composite protein, with the advantage that both moieties act on the same immune cells. The HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Env) spike, located...

Biologically formed nanoparticles of the strongly magnetic mineral, magnetite, were first detected in the human brain over 20 y ago [Kirschvink JL, Kobayashi-Kirschvink A, Woodford BJ (1992) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 89(16):7683-7687]. Magnetite can have potentially large impacts on the brain due to its unique combination of redox activity, surface charge, and strongly magnetic behavior. We used m...

We have previously described a mutant hepatitis B virus (HBV) with a fused X-C open reading frame (ORF) resulting from a single nucleotide insertion in the X-C overlapping region. A stably transformed cell line producing HBV particles, HepG2-K8, was established by transfecting the human hepatoma cell line HepG2 with a plasmid carrying four tandem repeats of the mutant HBV genome. The virus part...

We discuss the linear response of a filament to perturbations, taking the finite communication time between the filament and the photosphere into account. The finite communication time introduces delays in the system. Recently Schutgens (1997ab) investigated the solutions of the delay equation for vertical perturbations. In this paper we expand his analysis by considering also horizontal and co...

Fusing a lower resolution color image with a higher resolution monochrome image is a common practice in medical imaging. By incorporating spatial context and/or improving the signal-to-noise ratio, it provides clinicians with a single frame of the most complete information for diagnosis. In this paper, image fusion is formulated as a convex optimization problem that avoids image decomposition a...

N-Substituted imide-fused corannulenes can be generated from the corresponding tetramethylfluoranthenes. Syntheses, crystal structure and electronic properties are reported. The solid state structure of the pentafluorophenyl derivative shows nearly perfect π-stacking in a convex-concave fashion and is expected to possess useful electronic properties.

An efficient method towards the synthesis of quinoline fused tricyclic compounds involving an intramolecular 1,3-dipolar nitrile oxide cycloaddition reaction utilizing Baylis-Hillman derivatives in good yields has been described for the first time. A highly functionalized tricyclic framework was created by forming two rings and two adjacent stereocentres through the formation of two N-C bonds, ...

Domino reactions of 2-methyl substituted chromones containing an electron withdrawing group at the 3-position with chromone-fused dienes synthesized a diverse range of benzo[a]xanthones and complicated chromone derivatives. These multiple-step reactions result in either two or three new C-C bonds without a transition metal catalyst or an inert atmosphere.
